Bypassing Sky Router

Hello,

I am currently using a Sagemcom F@ST2504n, provided by Sky Broadband. However, when I was with a different internet service provider I was allowed to use my own Router which is a much better make and model than the current Sky provided router. I would like to go back to using this, however Sky only seem to allow use of their router, and refuse to give me any login details I need. I have tried extracting the username and password from the router my self, however when I try these in my own router it does not connect.

I am using an ADSL Connection. Here is an image of the router details.

Is there any way of using my own router with Sky?

Been there, done that.

Signed up to a contract a few years back on the strength of being told by no less than 3 different people that I could indeed use my own adsl2+ modem, they even advised me of a make/model to buy at a cost of £93 to myself.

After the account was set up I called them up for the very same details you are after.

They kindly, at that point, told me that "I am contractually obliged to use the modem/router supplied by sky" and that I was not allowed to use another despite being told of a make/model (Draytek Vigor) to buy, which I did.

In the end I made them come and remove all of the sky kit they installed (Sky plus boxes etc) and cancelled my contract.

I still have the modem they advised me to buy and they never reimbursed me for it.

Sky can kiss my arse!

That's a real shame man, I don't understand why they make people use their routers, it's not like they are supplying the best hardware. I know there's custom firmware for the Sky Routers, but there's no information on this model as of yet.

They provide a good service, but the routers are poor and I want out :(

If you can put up with it connect all your wired gear to your own switch and disable all but DHCP, unless of course the wireless on it is working for you, you could also use your own Access Point/s.

I had a similar issue with VirginMedia`s 'super' hub.

Super was a gross over the top exaggeration it was nothing short of piss-poor! Wireless range alone was a few feet.

It was essentially a Netgear vmg480 but butchered with Virgin-hacked firmware.

Once they enabled "Modem Only Mode" job was a good`un!

Never looked back.

Why they do it I don`t know.

They probably realized what a load of junk ISP's custom firmware is. I am already using my own Gigabit switch, as I hate the fact that when I switched over to Sky I had to get rid of my Gigabit router which I bought especially for the reason it has Gigabit, as it connects my entire network. I've invested in a few more switches to keep my gigabit, and the router is now essentials just a Wireless access point and Modem.

Thanks for the help anyway, guys! :D
