Buzzing in hd497s

So, I've got a pair of Sen. Hd497s and all has been well, except I'm beginning to notice a buzzing in the right ear piece.

I say I'm beginning to notice it simply because now that I'm plugging into a louder source (my guitar amp)- I hear the buzzing. See, it only occurs when the source is pretty loud, so normal use on my portable audio devices and even my reciever doesnt bring out the buzz. But, when I plug into my guitar amp, if things get loud enough, there is a buzzing in the right ear piece when things get loud.

I took the earpiece apart and nothing was inside shaking around... no bits of plastic... nothing. I tightened all the screws and still, the damn thing buzzes when the volume is loud. Weird thing is that its only the right ear.... the left ear is clean... i've tried this on numerous loud sources (ie- cranking my reciever) and its always the right- the left is never a problem.

Anyone else have this problem? Any sugestions on how to fix it?

Describe this buzz.
Is it a constant buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz or is more like crackling?
Buzzing indicates a cable problem
Crackling indicates a fuxored driver.

It's definitely not a crackling. What it really sounds like is theres a small piece of plastic rattling around within the can. It's not a loose buzz... its a tight sound... like if there was infact a piece of plastic rattling inside, it would be rattling within a very small space.

Hope that makes some sense. buzzing might not be the best way to describe it-- its a combination of a buzz and a rattle. Strange.

Could it just be that the the driver is getting too much thrown at it and it is distorting?

Sounds like you are hearing the driver rattle (which is usually what a ruined driver sounds like)

well damn. Dont know what I could have done to ruin the driver.

I wonder what it would cost to fix them.

I was thinking you could just replace the driver but a quick check of the Sennheiser site says otherwise (the elements are not available for purchase separately).
Contact them and see what they have to say.

before anything else, clean hairs off of the driver.

Both my sets of Senheisers had crackling in one ear, and in the end died. Seinheiser will not replace individual drivers so yea. SOL

well, it's the strangest thing...

I've taken these things apart numerous times trying to figure out what was causing the buzzing/rattle and I've had no luck. However, on the last time I took opened them up- I decided to not tighten the screws so much when I reassembled it. Bam... rattle/buzz gone. If I go and tighten them up alot, it comes back.

So, it just looks like I had the screws too tight. Odd, but thats the case.
