i bought an NEC FE991sb-bk 19" about 1 month ago and now when i have it turned on i heard a faint buzzing coming from it like an old flourescent light. is this normal for a CRT?

You might wanna check the refresh rate. I have a 17" CRT and if the refresh rate is incorrect I can hear a annoying buzzing sound too. I was playing CS (1024x768@60hz) but when I downloaded a program called ATI refreshfix and overrided to 75hz it fixed the buzz. It can be a video card related problem too...

It's not necessarily normal, but it might be completely harmless.

The buzzing sound is caused by coils and similar components inside the monitor when they start to vibrate due to the electricity flowing through them (in very simple terms). PSUs also buzz slightly for this reason, but there are ways to deal with this issue.

If you're worried, get an expert to take a look at it, otherwise be prepared to deal with this buzzing for a long time.

heh, same here excpet my monitor is really old, i think i need a new one.

My Mitsu DP930 (cousin to the NEC FE991) often buzzes very faintly, usually when displaying things with a lot of white.

Although it may be harmless, it annoys the hell out of me... one more reason to ditch this monster :)

Ya...I get it with lots of white also.

ok then i'm normal. i did go to a page through with all white background and black text and the page linked to targets within the same website but only 2 out of the 30 links from the main page, when i went to them, buzzed. they were all white too but for some reason only 2 buzzed. i found that to be very odd. i am certain that it was the same color white so i have no idea what causes that.
