The 7200.10 has proven itself as a great deal at the 320gb for $100 price point, beating out Maxtor for $/gig economy, and tying WD's 3200KS. The WD740GD will be surplanted by the 740ADFD.

I think the "reliable" catagory is a bit of a misnomer, and I don't really see that staying. I also want to add an additional catagory, labled "behemoth" or something like that, outlining the 500gb+ drives on the market right now, and compare their strengths and weaknesses.

Any interest in laptop drive recommendations?
 
Don't forget the WD5000KS as a new quiet pick, SPCR was _very_ impressed by it. Price is north of $200, so it will most likely only earn an honorable mention.

In the budget category, Hitachi Deskstar 7K80 is being discontinued and replaced by the 7K160. Expect the price point to remain about the same.

Agree totally with moving the WD740ADFD into the WD740GD's slot.

Perhaps the all-around divide should be moved to 320 or 400GB? Or maybe a price point, like $120?

As for laptop drives, Hitachi owns. The 7K100 is the drive to beat. Samsung's SP M 80GB drive for $85 shipped on ZZF is an awesome value.
