When I was got into gaming (around 8 or 9) I always looked in the bargin bin. I had no idea what games were coming out or were new releases (let alone the reviews).

When I got older and started reading game magazines and got online, I started picking them up as soon as I could.

A lot of people love to go out and buy (or order) their games when their first released, while others like to wait for the price to drop. Most games make the most money when they are first released, so which do you prefer?

I'm pretty much a release day guy myself. If I'm buying a game, it's most likely going to be on release day. If I'm buying an old game, it's because I'm kinda bored of the latest release day game. I don't buy tons of games anymore... in the past year I think I've got NFS:MW, Q4, SW: Empire At War, and Command and Conquer: The First Decade. Of those four, the last two were the only on release day ones.

I got all excited a month before oblivion and I wanted to get it on release, and two months later, was sitting at my computer, thought for a second, then it hit me "GOTTA GET OBLIVION!!!"

In closing, I'm not a release day kinda guy

If its a game that I am anticipating, I'll get it at release. If its a game that I hear is good and I don't really know that much about it I'll usually wait for a reason to get it (price drop).

Same here. If I know the game is good and I will be playing, I pick it up release date (via pre-order). If its an "ehh" game but piques my interest, I'll wait a month or two for the 20-50% price-drop.

My days of impulse buying went down the drain once I got a mortgage. :D

Oh, I forgot Oblivion!

I guess best way to sum up my habits is I don't wait for a reason to buy something. Either I want something new, or I've been anticipating something for a bit.

I'm very lazy in general, so the only games I get on release day are Steam games.

With most games needing patches after their release. I wait to to buy any game for price & patches.

I've only gotten one game on release and that was Flatout. I generally wait as I tend to buy game that have been out awhile. I have a hard time justifying spending $50 on a game.

Usualy wait for the first price drop on games I really want, and the bargain bin for other games.. Except steam games.. Too convnient, I don't have to even get out of my chair, just sorta lean forward a little to pull my wallet out
.. When EP2 comes out I will likely already have it pre-loaded..

I never bothing keeping up with when games are going to be released. Basically, when I hear people talking about it and discussing it, I'll probably go look for it and maybe buy it. I'd rather stand in front of the big games rack and buy something that looks good.

If it's something i'm really looking forward to i'll go buy it on the first day. For the most part though, i wait a while. I can't afford $50-$60 on every game i wanna play.

So true, with steam games it doesn't really matter, just reach for my wallet and pull out my credit card. While with games that are released in stores I usually wait for what peoples' opinions are on the game.

there are games worth spending $50 on... unfortunately no PC game store lets you have any refunds on them what-so-ever... so I ended up turning to piracy... I pirated Q4, HL2, Prey, UT2k4, Oblivion, Doom3, DarkStar One...etc... each, before I made up my mind about going in to pick them up... I own a retail version of each now so I dont feel bad bout it... but I do know that certain games I deleted after 5 minuets of play and was glad 100% that I didnt go out and drop $50 on them... in a world where PC game stores and manufacturers basicaly steal your money and you cant get it back even after you find out the game is bad... be it buggy or just crappy... I will never feel bad about trying the full version before buying...

I only buy games on release day which I'm excited about, otherwise I wait and wait and sometimes not even buy them at all hehe.

I was the same way when I was younger. I got my NES when I was 2. When I had got my Nintendo 64, I was 8, I didn't know there was even a Playstation out till like 2-3 years later. Once I got online when I was 10 I started reading gaming news and ever since ive bought games when they hit the shelves.

hell'z yea. to those game that allow it, with ease, and are mainly single player MANY get the "legitimized version" to test if its worthy to buy, cause most are not. and being in the bizz since its inception and around so many, a very high % do the same thing. own the ones that need special authentication and etc and test the others to see if they're worthy to buy

so no. never bought at release

Personally, I could only see that justified (justified, not legal) if the game didn't have a demo available.

I have lost faith in demos i'm afraid... I actualy beat HL2, Prey and Quake 4 more than half-way through before I bought the retail versions... more recently game developers only put the good stuff in demos and leave out any notion of bugs or repetitive play or deluted story line... the demos from FEAR or Rogue Trooper or DarkStar One leave a lot to be desired... I played a pirated version of fear for bout an hour before deciding not to buy it... I only recently bought it after they released FEAR Combat..

Even when I was little back in my console days I could never understand why anyone would pay $40-50 for a game when all you had to do was wait til greatest hits release and the you can get two for the price of one. The only time I buy a release game is if its something I really want or something everyone is raving about.

I usually wait for the price to drop unless it's a game with significant replayability and/or multiplayer that I will play a lot.

well the price on any good game only drops after 1-2 years. so i'll usually get it close to release.

For me waiting is a couple of weeks and it will be at gogamer for $35 in a 48 hour madness deal. I guess there is some truth to 80% of a games sales takes place in the first 2 weeks, because they are like fucking clockwork.Years waiting, whoa, then it's old.

I wont deprive myself of a game I really want over 10 or 15 bucks. But I've gotten selective over the years. Games less than 10 hours or right around that mark, won't get more than a madness purchase from me. I guess there was a period right around last year, so many games I wanted at once, I didn't get around to half of them before they were $15 less at gg. CoD2, Quake4, FEAR, and SS2, bought all those and none but the already half budget Serious Sam2 wasn't $35 in less than 2 weeks there. I lost over the amount of one B&M PC game in loot, in like one month.

I have waited atleast a month or more to get any of the games I have now. I wait for it to decrease atleast 10 dollars cheaper. E.g. Splinter Cell Chaos theory, i got it for 19.99 off of eb, then a month later there was a sale at CompUsa for 9.99. Man! I am cheap...

Well anyway, the first game im probably going to get at release is going to be Splintercell Double agent. Gotta love that Sam Fisher.

I agree on the whole waiting until its cheap except for titles I'm really looking forward to IE Oblivion and soon to be FF 12

For me FF12, Xenosaga III & KH 2 are games that i really want to play but they are too expensive so i can wait until they get $25 or less cheaper.

But the LOZ Twilight Princess (Wii version), LOZ Phantom Hourglass (DS), and FF III (DS) are games that i will pick up on release day it.

I guess it depends on the game some you can wait a while for the price to drop others are must haves.

I used to be a release kind of guy, but I have kinda lost faith in a lot of games coming out that are supposed to be "the game of the decade", or "the best game ever", or "best (insert genre) game ever made". Now im waiting, for prices to go down.

The best example that comes to mind is I bought Far Cry on release, still havent beat it and I can get it $40 cheaper now. BF2 is another one, I bought it, played it the first 2 weeks and havent really touched it since.

Maybe games just dont do what they used to for me. Think part of the reason is reading all the hype and reviews.

Very rare to buy a release game. It has to fall under the following categories:

Civilization series
Dragon Quest series
Command and Conquer/Battle for Middle Earth
Mario Kart
(Formerly Heroes of Might and Magic series, but HOMM4 disappointed)
(Formerly Master of Orion, but Moo3 sucked, $50 down the drain)

Oh yes - worthy of an entire platform purchase! That and UT - which is what I will be basing my next upgrade around.

Very rare that I buy release day.

For any big budget major game I'll get it asap, like doom3, quake4, hl2, WOW, oblivion, prey, fear, etc.. If it's something that I'm interested in but isn't so outstanding I'll wait.. Now that you mention it, it feels like a long time since any huge games have come out.. I'm bored :(

PC games I'll sit on my hands for a while, I always have something else to do on the PC (Warcraft, Rise of Nations, work).

Console games are a different story - with the games that you know will become rare within a week or two (i.e., Atlus games) or if the game is just one of those "gotta get it now" games like a Zelda, I will buy them at release. Sure the big ones will stay in stock and will eventually come down in price, but I'm not waiting 6 months - a year for that.

I will buy all Guild Wars games from now on when they are released. There are some games I will buy at release, some I won't. Sometimes I've taken a bath and wasted money, most of the time I have not. It's just a matter of being an informed consumer, like in any other market.

If it's a game I want, I get it at release. Otherwise, I just get something whenever I get around to it.
