I'm wanting to get some external sound for my ipod. Which do you think is the best buy.

All I would need is a stereo minijack cable right? It would sound just the same?

Save the 5.1 systems for the games and movies. ;)

Any multimedia speakers are going to have a minijack cable coming out of them... just hook the ipod up and listen. :)
 
Even if you get the 5.1 system, it will only play through the front left and right speakers, cuz your music is in stereo and the iPod doesnt upsample, in fact, no portable player does to my knowledge.

I 2nd the motion on the Klipsch 2.1.

Not necessarily. The Logitech z5500 has its own decoder and can upmix the stereo to 5channel stereo (I believe) and Prologic.
 
Think I've decided on the z-5500 for all my multi-purpose audio needs.
 
I should have said that my computer I'll be using this for is a laptop, so just getting those speakers would be pointless. So tell me if this looks good and will deliver great sound.

It'll probably do the trick.

I have the Audigy 2NX. It's not a terrible card, unfortunately with laptops you don't get a whole lot of choice. Keep in mind that using this thing for recording is out of the question (even using it for voice chat). The microphone input is almost useless (lots of noise on the line, i've tried multple microphones with it with the same result). Overal output is ok, not amazing but certainly better than the onboard sound on my laptop.
