Buying a PS3 on launch day

good luck haha...They were lined up around here for 2 days before for just the TRU pre-orders...

Wal-Mart will have significantly more than TRU, guaranteed. I'd be willing to bet that Wal-Mart has about 60~75% of the launch systems.

And the difference is that on the TRU about 5-10% of parents knew about it...this one..100% of parents know about it.

If your right...Im happy for you. But I wouldn't expect someone that gets at a store that day being able to get one.

Are you serious? The pre-order information was in those TRU flyers that go out in the mail. Everyone knew about it.

Now the question is, since everyone seems to think Walmart is getting the most... Would it be a better idea to camp somewhere like Target, where there is bound to be less people since everyone will be at Walmart?

^^^
depends, there is a lot to be said for camping inside a warm store.
I would think Target will get maybe 5 systems at the most ?

Well, I can assure you that others will be thinking along the same lines. But if you think of the reasoning that would make someone considering Target to go to Walmart instead, well, you walk around in circles don't ya? ; )

I've got a question. If you are assigned numbers when you get in line (the order that people would get the system before the preorders, or maybe preorders were in line for some reason, w/e. There are a few ways the numbering thing could go), when/if there is a big rush when the store opens doors, will they then call out the numbers (preferably over speaker-horn-phone thingies) then you go up to the counter and claim your PS3? If so, then the whole pissing thing is moot. Although to counter that process merely acting as a secondary preorder, there could be random line checks to see if the people are still in attendance (so they'd have to stay there the whole time). Hell maybe they could issue out toliet passes.

It would be a lot of work, and it may seem like treating customers like children, but if the area around that shop isn't too great, I'm sure it would be worth the effort to make the whole thing more civil. And quite frankly, I don't have enough faith in people to not act like total dicks.

That was a whole lot more long winded than I intended. Oh well, guess that's a good thing since I've been trying to kill some time anyways. >.>

Edit: Forgot to ask something. In a place like Walmart there'd be a few security guards right? (never having been there myself) Considering the people that can be attracted by launch day, and the kind of temperament and determination that some people may have; would there be a security guard (or two) be place nearby for possible trouble? Hell, if I were a manager I'd probably bring in quite a few people that day to escort people back to their cars. Then again, maybe I'm just a worry wart.

I think the length of time you will have to camp depends almost entirely on where you live. If you live in CA or NYC, then plan on going REALLY early as they always seem to have insane lines for things like this. However, if you live in a smaller town you might be able to show up at around 8 or 9pm on Thursday night and still get one.

For example, when the new Elmos came out, my wife told me to stop at Target on my way home from work to see if I could buy any. I looked online and saw how they sold out within hours all over the country and thought I had no chance. Well, I did stop and they had shelves full of them. Hardly any were missing from the displays. I walked out of the store with 7 carts full of those things; 50 Elmos in total (They have since placed limits on how many you can buy :D ). My point being that it all depends on your market whether you will have to wait 12 hours or 3 days for a PS3.

I really don't have time to camp, so I will likely just buy one on ebay. I have no problem paying extra money to someone who took the time out of their lives to camp and get a system. I used to camp myself in my college years (PS2, concert tickets), but I am at a point in my life where it just makes more sense to pay someone else to do the camping for me.

Anyway, I can't wait to get my PS3 to put next to my 360. I will be getting a Wii too, but my wife says I have to wait until Christmas so she actually still has something she can buy me. :)

I will sell you a PS3 and a Wii (pre-ordered both already)...Kill 2 birds with one stone :D

Yeah...nobody I talked to heard about it from the ad...They heard about it from a friend...

Everyone I camped with at Toys R Us, like me, heard about it from the internet.
I was thinking I'd have the drop but more people were lined up much earlier for this than the EB/Gamestop pre-order event.
Which is what makes me think the launch day is going to be crazy. I'm thinking I'll need to plan on camping a solid 24 hours in line.

I think it will be even more crazier then that. I know a friend of mine is going to start Wed afternoon. And I am sure he isn't the only one in america to think this way...

Well then im camping out tuesday. Im going to bring my grill and some ribeye's. See ya

So you can personally guarantee that there wasn't a single person who heard about it in the ads? TRU should hire you; they'd save millions in advertising dollars if nobody seems to be receiving the flyers they send out. Advertisements spread by word of mouth just as well as they do from the flyers themselves; one person gets the add, tell all his friends.

So you want to try and argue with me? I am telling you right now you won't win especially when your trying to put words in my mouth...So here goes:

Where did I say there wasn't a single person who heard about it from the ad's? Don't put words in my mouth. I said that everybody WHO I TALKED TO didn't hear about it from the ad's

Your the person that says EVERYONE heard about it. I never saw it in the ad's. Some of my friends who are wanting a PS3 didn't even know TRU was doing pre-orders until it was too late. So I guess EVERYONE as you say didn't know about it.

Next?

You implied it, guy. Whether or not the limited amount of people you had contact with knew about it through the flyers really isn't relevant, and by implying otherwise, you're basically saying that you don't think the magazines were effective. The fact of the matter is that it is far more likely that most people heard of it through the flyers because even this forum (Which is extremely large in comparison to others) only represents a negligible fraction of the industry. There's a reason companies like TRU send those magazines out; if online sales were the venue that provided them the most money, they wouldnt't bother to spend that kind of money on paper advertising anyways.

How do you think the people that broke the stories on these forums heard about it? The earliest sources I saw noted that the information would be displayed in the send-outs, which means they likely saw an advanced copy before it went to publishing.

Next?

Are you smoking something? I never said that the ad wasn't a good source...I never said that the ad didn't do anything...All I said was about 5-10% of parents knew about it..Not "EVERYONE" knew about it. Stop putting words in my mouth and saying I implied something. I mean everybody in the world can twist words around and say people said stuff when they really didn't...and your doing a good job of it.

The point is not "EVERYONE" saw the ad like you say. Only about 10% of parents in america saw it. So since about 100% of parents know that Nov. 17th is launch day. It will be 20x worse then the TRU one's...Do you really see no logic in this?

I usually throw away ads without even looking at it. Too much junk mail! I heard about the TRU pre-order online, especially the forums. Rumors on the internet spread like a plaque.

Where in the Hell are you pulling this "10 percents!!!!111" figure from?

My Walmart is supposedly only getting 4 PS3's....and I know of at least 4 people who are planning on camping out for 3 days to get those 4. So for people who haven't recieved a preorder....start very very early.

im new to this, i have some questions:

how does the waiting line system work? what if i have to go to the bathroom? can someone hold the spot for me (switch back and forth)?
Well, for the Xbox 360, we camped out at Fry's and it worked very well. The manager told us there were 16 units, and we agreed that if we made a list that the manager would enforce it. We all drew up a list, with names, position in line, and which they wanted (core/prem). Everyone agreed that we wouldn't let anyone cut in. A lot of people tried to slip in early in the morning, but we all chased them off. Fry's opened, the manager got our list, and followed it to the letter. Worked great, everyone got their unit, and the whole event was a lot more relaxed and had a much lighter atmosphere.

Anyways, if I do camp out, I'm going to try making up a list again.

Where in the hell are you pulling this "EVERYONE" which equals 100% figure from?

Next question... Is there a one console limit? What if the guy at the front of the line decides to buy the whole entire stock to sell on ebay? I'm assuming there must be a limit.

if said event happens, you are legally allowed to apply a tire iron to said persons face.

everywhere will have a limit of one per customer, it's been that way for every launch i can remember

Everyone is hyperbole. Maybe you've heard of it.

10% is a specific figure that makes it sound like it's actually come somewhere aside from your ass.

To the other question; there will be a one-console limit. The risk associated with selling more than one console to one person is too great; businesses don't want to be liable for the fights that would inevitably break out if one person bought up all their stock.

I don't know about legally, but it could work if everyone decides to "look the other way" while the beating is taking place.

K600 you win...since yours can be sarcastic but mine can't..

If at launch he can go to Walmart that day and get it and its not worse then the TRU pre-orders.... Then your the winner. Deal?

Back to my original point. There will be long long lines a day or 2 or 3 ahead of time for the PS3's...UNLIKE the TRU's because not "EVERYONE" knew about the TRU pre-orders

I was thinking....do you guys think that people know to go to the sony style stores located in some malls? Like I keep hearing people say walmart and target and best buy but these sony stores are getting ps3s as well. plus since they are in malls usually, you cant camp there...

What do you guys think??

I think nothing is going to pass by people, if there is 1 PS3 at a store, people will be there.

okay, so when does the PS3 officially launch at retail stores again?

You are definately right about that. Generally, it's all about the scalpers wanting to make assloads of money, and many of these guys are street smart enough to figure these details out.

Im conviced about this sony style idea. I really dont think people realize about this store. plus i know they will have a lot of units. sony is the type of brand that would give their stores more units then general stores.

I may take school off that day (Thursday)...I'll be in Walmart Wedenesday at around 6, and wait approximately 30 hours for launch. If that isn't enough, I'm gonna be one angry person.

Check with your Walmart before you start. I am in a college town and my Walmart is only getting 4 PS3's. So 30 hours might not be enough...

I doubt they already know how many they're going to get. Several people at the local Wal-Mart who I know personally said that they wouldn't know for certain until the week before launch. They might be wrong, but they were dead-on last year.

I used to work at the Best Buy near me (Fairfield county, CT) and its one of the top stores in the country. Considering how rich this area is, the store usually gets more items then others.

That being said, I talked to my friend that still works there and he told me they are getting 10 ps3s on launch day.

So I think if you want a ps3 on launch day, no matter where you are, its most likely you will have to camp out.

Hmm they are thats news to me o and umm i hope no one on this forums know those other then you cuz umm well they will be fired on the spot for leaking number

o and every bestbuy is only getting 5 to sell no matter if it is in a rich neighborhood

because bestbuy targets middle america

and you said you worked there who are examples they use for middle america and what is middle america

those PS3 that they get are not allowed to be sold anyways maybe one at the max

Hey man,
I am having trouble reading your post, can you try using correct grammar when formulating your sentences?
If bestbuy targets middle america then why did they purchase magnolia hometheater? Which is a high end audio/video store.. its because they want to target the higher class individuals. They also want to go into service related items i.e. geek squad, installations, and others
So when you say they target middle america, what do you mean?

I realise I might get lynched for suggesting this in *this* particular forum, but...

Why not wait a few months, like with G80, for prices to drop and availability to rise? Does the social status of beating everyone else to one mean that much, or are y'all just that impatient? :?
