I just happened to buy a 512MB stick of corsair value select RAM (400 MHz) last week for 86$ at newegg and thought it was a moderately good deal. As I was browsing through the egg this afternoon I saw that the same piece was up to 95$ and I thought, "man, I did get a good deal". Now, I went back tonight and was looking at what was on sale and the same piece of RAM was selling for 104$. Now I saw last week that Infineon (or one of the big manufacturers) was cutting down production of memory moduals, but would the effect be this drastic this quick?
 
Yep. Memory is like a commodity (think oil), the price is very influential by news of cut in production, supply and demand. The reason we have been living in a period of cheap RAM is that there was lots of supply with little demand. Now, though, demand is starting to catch up with supply, thus the price hikes.
 
yes.. but really the way it's happening is that supply is diminishing... one of the main memory mfg's has said they are cutting production by a large amount due to moving factories or changing factories.

Remember that ram factory disaster that happened back in 2000? was it.. yea that was a bad time to buy ram.

well, they finally realized that there are only a few fabs in the world, and they CAN get together and dictate prices;)
 
I grabbed my 1GB of Mushkin PC3200 lvl 1 off Newegg for just $203 a little over a week ago. Considering the pricing now it was a steal for the best memory on the market.
 
I always seem to buy my RAM at the top of the market, not the bottom *sigh*.

Well, I did get a stick of 512MB DDR2700 for $20 last year, that was a bargain!
 
I'm putting together a new system that I won't need for another three months. Should I wait to buy my RAM? I know it's difficult to speculate, but then some of you must have seen this sort of thing happen before and have some idea when it might end.

I remember it! :mad: The price of RAM went up so much that my parents decided to go ahead and buy a damn HP, because they thought it would be a lot cheaper due to the RAM going up.
 
The memory that I just bought (Corsair TwinX PC3200LLPT DDR(400)) just went from 155.00 to 171.00 in two days.

So I agree, get it now while it is not too expensive.
 
so wait, because one dickhead company is cutting down production, ALL prices skyrocket??

id love to get a job at a ram company, release a press statment saying theyre quadrupling ram prices, then buy a shitload when it quickly drops to $10 a gig. itd so be worth getting fired for :D
