Okay so right now the x800xl pci-e goes for $249+ Well is there any new cards coming out any time soon? I mean is it a better idea for the time being to just go with a 6600GT and wait for the new cards to come out?

Well supposedly the next-gen R520 series from ATI is coming out in september/october.. so I suppose you could wait for that if you wanted to. But waiting for the next big thing in computers isn't such a great idea since things advance so quickly. You tell yourself "Hey, Ill just wait another couple months.." and by the time those months have passed, something brand new is just another few months away. Just buy what you can afford now.

I say wait b/c we're only dealing with 2-4 months before ATI releases their next-gen product.

then nvidia might decide to start rumors on say a 7800 ultra to be released 2 months after ati releases r520.

I keep hearing about the r520. Whats so special? I mean if it's that good then it would probally be better to just pick up a 6200 or 6600GT and wait for the r520 huh? an x800xl would be good now but going with nvidia would save me at least $70

The r520 is ATi's answer to the 7800 series. Nobody outside of ati and its board partners know what its specs will be. There are a lot of foolish people here that will try and tell you how many pipes or what speed it is, but the truth is, they don't know. Until [H] has some info, i'll be skeptical.

side note, can anyone explain vivo to me. I thought it was going to be like a tv tuner but doesn't come with the cable in thing on the cards. What is it exactly?

Opportunity Cost.

If you buy now, you can benefit from the derived "utility" of having the card now. If you wait for the R520 your "opportunity cost" is whatever you miss out by not buying now and enjoying.

It all depends on what is more valuable to you, NOW or LATER?

Hrm good point,
So a x800 with a Core 392MHz and Mem 700MHz beats out a 6600GT with Core of 500MHz and Mem 1000MHz? Really?

VIVO = Video In Video Out. It does not have a tuner but it will take in and record video from a S-Video cable or Composite cables. (Like your VCR or Cable box outputs).

The next-gen video cards arrived a while ago with the 7800GTX.

The 6600GT is a good mid range card with support for SM3.0, FP16 HDR and Pure Video.
