So I am in the process of building a new computer for Vista. My question is after having watched memory prices vary by hundreds of dollars for similar items based on what largely seems like distributor's whim, am I better off buying memory now, @ the price they are currently at? Or should I wait until Vista is publicly released at the end of the month and hope that memory prices go down rather than up? I'm leaning towards buying now, as won't the increased demand with Vista drive the prices up?
 
If you're thinking very short term, yeah, probably better to avoid the crunch when the early adopters of vista realize they can't get away with 512.

If you're thinking longer term, I'm reading thru a pretty spiffy market report that seems to indicate that weakness in 1H07 is likely and price erosion is likely to be severe later in the year. NAND flash ain't looking so healthy either... Lots of fab capacity being added and not a lot of new demand, even factoring in the expectations driven by vista.

I recall when XP came out - all the people I knew could not wait. Now, it seems most are happy with XP and do not plan on upgrading. True, it could be my friends have changed, but I just don't fell the buzz I did from others 5.25 years ago.

It might be XP is 'good enough' and Windows 98, 98SE and ME are long gone - thus not giving many users reason to switch.

I also don't see OEM like Dell adding to their standard quota of memory.

I'll bet it might go down some more.
 
Actually, OEMs are part of the reason for the IC shortages we see. Unless we either get more production from Micron fabs or some other IC manufacturer comes to the rescue with great performing 64mb ICs, memory prices are not likely to drop much due to supply (or lack thereof) and demand.
 
see now im wondering the same thing. Ive heard from some people that prices are soon to drop down, but i dont really see any evidence to sway the topic either way.

i just want more memory damnit :(

Really, is this a function of OEM adding to their avgerage RAM amount or are they just selling more boxes? AFAIK, the OEM's have not gone past 512MB (rare) to 1 GB (common) as their base config for a while.
 
From what I hear, Micron is the primary (only???) memory supplier for Dell right now. So, that applies to new boxes and upgrades. Also, last I checked, Dell was not offering DDR800 memory options right now due to these shortages.

Man, I've been waiting since august last year for the prices to fall. Running on just 512MB of ram right now.
Now I gotta wait another 7 months ???:(
