Are butane torches any good for welding? I have 1mm and 3mm aluminum I want to try and weld together to complete one of my case projects, but I want to see what you guys would use.
Not unless you are real lucky. gas welding aluminium is tricky and takes alot of practice to do well. the heavy-on oxygen method of useing a gas torch to weld aluminium is not do-able with a butane torch. you need to increase your heat with oxygen and not with the flammable gas, there is no mixture ability with that kind of torch so the increase in temp to get the aluminium to flow will leave lots of debris in the weld.
also welding different thickness's of material is very hard to do with aluminium, much practice is needed on the actual sizes you are planning to weld, to get the job done correctly and looking good.
if the amount of welding is small, take it to a refrigeration shop, or someone who does that kind of welding, it will look better and actually cost less than getting the stuff to do it and trying yourself until it is a good weld.
