Burnt out Mobo

I recently burned out my mobo on one of my systems and have a few questions now that the replacement parts have arrived.

1. Will I need to format my harddrive once it's on the new mobo or do I just need to install the drivers?

2. What is the easiest way to clean a processor of old termal paste?

1.) You shouldn't have to, but be prepared just incase.

2.) Isopropyl alcohol, as high a purity as you can find, is excellent for removing thermal paste and oil from electronics.
 
If you use the exact same mobo, you should just be able to plug the old harddrive in and go.

If you use a new mobo with the same chipset, you should be ok but have some driver reinstalls.

If you use a new mobo with a different chipset, you'll probably have to reformat.
 
If it's the exact same motherboard model and chipset you don't need to reinstall anything, just plug and go, if anything is different though, a format and clean install is HIGHLY recommended but you can get away with out sometimes.

For cleaning, isopropyl is great, but I recommend Everclear from the local liquor aisle if you can get it. Isopropyl will sometimes leave a thin film if it's not a high percentage mix.
