Burning smell

Last night, i was fooling around in Photoshop, and burning smell hit my nose.
It was plastic.
I rushed to turn off my computer... flipped off the power supply, unplugged it and stuck my head inside... there was no remnants of the smell. I took out my video card, checked around for burn marks and the smell... nothing. Checked around my cpu and northbridge... checked the pci slots and agp slots... checked the power supply lines... checked the wires, fans, random dust... took a shop vac on blow and cleaned the bitch out... started it back up and ran rthdribl AND the nvidia screen saver for an hour... no smell...

I can't figure it out, so if you guys could tell me to smell in a couple places i may be missing, please do :)

I told my mom about it this morning, and she said to check out the monitor... it's an old peice of shit cicero, and she's had quite a few monitors blow up on her. The monitor WAS on for quite some time, and i never did smell the back of it when i smelled the burning... so...

What do you guys think?

Monitors can make some funny smells, especially if it is old..

Anyway, you did the right thing by shutting everything off. A false alarm, yes, but at least you know now that if if was your proc blowing up, you were ready to respond ;)
 
New monitor time! If it bursts into flames though, be sure to take pictures for the rest of us. ;)
 
Yeah the monitor is a good bet .... also it could just be dust burning off ... maybe clean your rig... also check your power supply if you have a generic or poor one. Thoose things are time bombs my old computer was turned off and I was laying in bed ... all of a sudden i heard an arc the room lit up and all i could smell was burning plastic... oh well at least it did not fry anything.

Yeah, i gave it a good clean..
And i've been through my share of bad PSUs... Even a thermaltake crapped out on me after 6 months... i have a good Enermax now, so i don't think it's that.

But, make sure you've got a nice good reliable FE-36 fire extinguisher on standby when and if it does burst into flames.
 
I work in a tech shop and I smell that particular aroma all the time. One day I was working on a data transfer and I smelled a burning smell comming out of nowhere. I sniffed around all the computers in the area, and I couldn't find the source. It seemed to be coming in the middle of the tile room, but then quickly disappeared. It must have been the ghosts of all the burned components haunting my tech shop. So Jackie, maybe it was a ghost.
 
This may seem funny, but did you consider that it might have just been the heat turning on? Wherever I've lived, every year around October, when the heat is turned on for the first time, it smells burnt. I guess its somehow related to the fact that it hasn't been used in a long time. But I can certainly tell that it has been turned on.

could be the heat. The dust settles on the ducts during the summer when heat is not used. We get toned out all the time to those. I'm a firefighter. I would also make sure you get a new monitor.
