Ever wanted to ask a bum questions about how they got to their current situation? Now you can with “Pimp this Bum.” Tim Edwards, a homeless guy in Houston, was the lucky one picked by a marketing specialist and his son as they originally sought to test an internet marketing strategy and instead tried to help someone. Exploitation or genuine concern? What do you think?

During regular Webcasts, dozens of visitors tohttp://www.pimpthisbum.com/ ask questions about Edwards' life and his slow fall from office manager with a home, a car, and a future to an outcast short of hope and with little prospect of help.

At 37 years of age, this guy can join the military, problem solved. Unless he 'wants' to be a 'bum', in which case he's just another in an endless list of people who claim to have been a victim in life.

Some people can't catch a break. Some people don't have friends or family to fall back on in hard times and thus have to resort to "being a bum". Sure, some can help themselves but choose not to, others simply can't help themselves.

the military wont take everybody, and rather then letting all tax payers pick up the tab I like the fact that he is open to getting up and running no matter how. Some people just need a push.

Had my wife, girlfriend at the time, had not pushed me get started in IT who knows what I would be stuck doing.

The military will take anyone that hasn't made repeated, calculated 'mistakes' in life. This guy is a leech, and should be treated as such. To think that he is able bodied and his only motivation is to take his beggars can to the www is apalling. Every liberal should be screaming. He is taking tax dollars away from YOUR pet projects.

OTOH, he is able to 'Beg enough for the bare necessities - food, cigarettes, drink'. Why give him any attention when he is obviously capable of getting what he needs in life?

If you dont pass the physical or the mental evaluation they wont take you in. overweight, depressed and/or previous medical problems.

Just watched the video on the front page, the way he talks, he appears perfectly sane and even intelligent.

According to "the_dealer" he is a piece of shit scum stain who deserves nothing more than contempt and scorn and should he die right now, all the better.

i wish more people felt like that about rapists, theifs, child molesters and less about homeless people.

Ya... avoiding the "How did you get here" question pretty much voids any chance of me ever donating.

Sounds to me like another person that drank himself into homelessness. Why should I act to counter natural selection? I drink, yet I don't ruin my life with it. I do (some) drugs, but I don't ruin my life with it. Why should I help people who don't even have the willpower to not drink their life away? What is the point in that?

Nemesis999, you seem to want to find an excuse not to help people. Does it really matter how/why he became homeless? Not really, everyone tends to do what they perceive will benefit themselves the most, alcoholics included if they have too much to deal with. People aren't robots, their past can catch up with them emotionally. It's easy for someone who hasn't had a hard life to not understand that, and even easier for someone who hasn't had a hard life to assume theirs was as bad when it may not have been.

People are, if anything, the sum of their experiences. Being hard on someone who has already had it hard, is an excuse to be inhumane. Many of us don't appreciate enough that others around us are our safety net and look out for our interests, but some people don't have this safety net.

Remember that roughly 1 in 10 people are mentally ill by the standard definition, possibly more if you include irrational behavior. Plenty are also physically ill. There are as many unique situations as there are homeless people.

That isn't natural selection at all. Some people are more prone to becoming addicted to substances such as alcohol. You are also forgetting the fact that mental illnesses like depression and living circumstances can also play a major role in these things as well. But hey, the world seems like a better place for you when you're looking at it from your high horse, doesn't it?

eh, some homeless people are just victims of circumstance, nobly or not so nobly struggling to get back on their feet.. but some homeless people put themselves there with poor decisions. then there are a million places in between.. cant really make a sweeping generalization about any large group and be accurate.

that having been said, this bum online thing is semi disturbing to me for some reason.
