built computer doesn't work..

I like getting myself into thing

ok here goes, I just got the last part of my computer.. it's all put together now :-| when I power up.. all I get is beeps..

help me trouble shoot please

What beeps, what mainboard, what PC, what everything. Need more info...

ok.. you need to take the motherboard,, set it on a table..

plug in only these things:
cpu (with heatsink of course)
ram
video card (if you even need one)
and the power supply...

then take a screwdriver and touch the to pins together that you normally would hook the power button up to...

if it works, start adding parts until it quits working (you have to shut down and unplug the power before adding anything) just making sure....

and when you add somethign and the comptuer quits working.. there is your problem...

Continuous beeps = Bad cpu.
Eigth or so beeps = Bad vidio card.
Two or three = Bad memory.
Maybe...... If you have an Amni bios.
Award / IBM / Pheonix are different.

It all depends on what bios you have as to what your beeps mean.

Why would he need to do this? How about him telling us a bit more about his setup and what is happening before he totally takes the entire thing apart.

So is anything at all happening on your screen?

First try to reset the CMOS. Read your manual on how to do it but there should be a little jumper near the battery on the motherboard. Is the motherboard new or refurbished? If refurb, perhaps they reset the CMOS but never put the jumper back to the right position.

nothing on the screen at all.. and I did reset the CMOS.. but not being able to see anything on the screen :-| don't know if it did anygood.... I think it's new.. it should be

If you have a Chainteck 7NJL4 then its an Award bios if my Google seach is correct.
If so then repeating low tone beeps is bad ram.
I dont think that motherboard works with ECC ram.
Try a stick of non-ECC ram in there just to check.

If it a two tone / high pitched beeps then its a bad / damaged CPU.

Did you ever get your heatsink mounted to your cpu firmly? I remember in another thread you said there is a 1-2mm gap between cpu and heatsink... Though now that I think about it you could have been talking about the fiberglass/ceramic/whatever base that the cpu core sits on.

Is that ECC ram registered? If it is I bet that's the problem. I haven't read the manual for that board, but most single proc setups don't take registered memory. Most duals require it. If you're not sure if it's registered just post the part # from the ram & one of us can look it up.

and yeah, it's mounted a bit too firmly if you ask me :-| I tried peeling it off a few hours ago to see the serial number.. and nearly snapped my board
