Well first, I was wondering... Go with a 1.9 barton (OC to hell), or a 2.17 thoroughbred (OC also). Which can overclock higher?

I don't mean to thread crap or be mean or anything here but wouldnt it have been easier to just tell us WHAT each part is??? The majority of the guys around here have no problem reciting hardware specs to themselves.....and if someone doesn't know EVERYTHING about it, THEN they can do the search.

I'll probly still pull up Newegg to see what's being put into the system but just for future reference.....typing the product names/models is the better way to go in a case like this.

EDIT:

I'd change.....

- The burner/dvd to a single combo drive
- The thermal compound to Arctic Silver 5
- The 512MB stick of ram to 2x256MB so you can actually do dual channel
- Don't cheap out on the PSU.....it's more important then a lot of people think. Go for an Antec Truepower 430W and you'll be laughing. Why wouldn't you want quality and stable power going through his new system???

A lot of other stuff I'd probly change due to personal preference but that's beside the point. I'm trying to point out the things that (no hard feelings here plz) just don't make sense.

Hope you take me seriously here and don't take anythign personally, 'cus I'm trying to help you here.
 
He's on a pretty tight budget, and I think he likes the idea of having 2* Drives, so he can run a movie, say, and play a game in a window at the same time.

Sorry about the #s, it's just I didn't feel like completely.. well taking up a sh**load of space..

Also, what about the processor?
 
First off, I have to say that it was a PITA to actually paste that stuff in and look for each individual part.

Anyways, criticisms:

1.) Antec Silver paste: I've used it before in my recent system, and while it is decent, I'd go with Arctic silver 3 or 5. AS5 has helped my temps a little more than Antec silver.

2.) I'd go for a Lite-On combo drive. I like this better because it gives a better option for a future dvd writer or such.

3.) I must agree with changing the power supply. Fortron or Antec True Power PSUs will rock.

edit: the processor...is he going to overclock? If he is, I'd go for a Barton 2500+ or the mobile 2400+ or mobile 2500+. If not, stick with the 2600+, though Barton 2500+ is pretty much an equivalent performer anyways.
 
He will never ever use a DVD-Writer or the likes.. but thanks for the comment.

2) I'll switch the PSU and Thermalgrease, mind you he picked these out..

3) What is "pita" :)
 
PITA = pain in the ass. Having to look up individual parts by part number is a PITA. :p

Ah well, no biggie.

Well, if he doesn't ever need a DVD writer, then I guess dual drives if he has a use for it.

Other than that the system looks pretty nice.

If he's ordering soon, you might to look at the seagate 80 gig hard drive deal at Bestbuy.com. 80 gigs for $50, no rebate.

It's good to hear that you're seriously considering changing the PSU and paste.....good move. I'd agree that a 2500+ would most likely do him just fine if he's not overclocking, but whatever. A lot of people (like me) would rather have a 2GHz cpu over a 1.8GHz. ;)

I wouldn't even bother looking at T-bred's. While they are nice procs (and some have been pretty good OCers from what I've read and seen, their performance lags behind the Bartons because they have half the cache (256 K compared to Bartons' 512 K).

The Bartons will OC fine. The Barton 2500+ can hit 3200+ speeds and beyond in many cases.

The mobile barton 2400+ and mobile barton 2500+ are pretty good OCers too and many on the forums have achieved amazing OCs out of the mobile bartons.

I'm afraid it's not quite THAT simple. There are more things then wether or not it's a barton that come into play when you're overclocking.

I say stick with a Barton.....and the 2500+ has been unofficially ruled in as the OC champ in the bang for your buck section of processors.....like the 1700+ JIHUB before it.
