As the title says I'm going to be building my first rig soon and i've already got a wishlist that I was hoping you guys could help me out with. I'm going to be getting the e6420 and probably couple it with This GSkill or possibly some corsair, although from what i've read the newer sticks aren't overclocking as well.

I'm still debating on a motherboard though and i was hoping maybe your input might clear things up. From what i've gathered, the p965 chipsets seem to overclock very well. I'm not going to be running SLi so I don't really need a 680i chipset. So i guess my question would be what mobo would you suggest for running roughly a 7x475 3.3GHz OC?

In your opinion do you think that if i couple this with a zalman 9500 or 9700 that it will stay cool enough? This setup will be in my basement where it is roughly 55-60 constant and case ventilation will not be a problem.

Feel free to criticize/ridicule my noobness..

Thanks all...

I'd go for a p5b deluxe on the motherboard, or the newer DFI board.

Those should do 475 fairly easily at the 1:1 setting for your RAM. I'd suggest looking into a kit of the 2gbHK Gskill's as they'll almost surely be able to do 950mhz.

Thanks for the input, I like the ram. Again I am new to this so if you make a suggestion like "the new DFI boards" could you be a little more specific? I know my brother has a p5b board (not deluxe) and it has some decent overclocking ability.

Anyone else?

Go grab that GSkill memory before they find out someone made a mistake and jack the price up. $125 for that stuff is a great deal.

I'm using an Asus P5B Deluxe wifi edition and it's a great board. If you're not going to be using SLI then I'd put this board on your short list.

For your info, a 6420 uses an 8X multiplier so if you are planning to run a high FSB then you could get by with an E6320 which uses the 7X multi. 500 X 7 wouldn't be out of the question especially in your cool basement with a decent cooler.

Head to AnandTech for a good assortment of cooler reviews. There are better coolers available than the Zalman's.

If you get that memory and a P5B, just PM me if you need any help getting some big MHz out of your new combination.

I think this is the DFI board that the previous guy was talking about:

Wow i really like both of those boards...The DFI is a little cheaper than the p5b deluxe so i may go with that but we will see. I would like to wait for some more reviews to come out to give the board some more time to really prove itself. Although from the few reviews i read it seems pretty solid.

I took your advice and went to anandtech an after reading some reviews the tuniq tower 120 really stuck out in multiple reviews. Its about at much as the zalman and definitely performs better so I'll probably go with that instead.

I know the e6320 has a 7x multi but i just want the e6420 in case i decide to ever use an 8x multi. Thanks for the input...

I like the Tuniq as well.

The reviews and awards speak for themselves. It has a very solid mounting system and with the fan in the middle it's more compact and easier to install than some of the others.

Memory:
G.Skill / Corsair / OCZ - you can't really go wrong with any of these brands in the higher speeds. (DDR2 800+) Just look for versions that are known to be good overclockers, narrow by price, and pick your poison.

Cooling:
(Air cooling, that is)
The current best of, in order, are.....
1. Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme
2. TIE - Thermalright Ultra 120 / Tuniq Tower
3. Noctua NH-U12F

Boards:
EVGA 122-CK-NF67-A1 (My personal favorite)
Asus P5B Deluxe WiFi
DFI INFINITY P965-S

For the sake of reference, I have the E6420, on Intel stock cooler (temporary), on the EVGA board, with OCZ Reaper PC8500's. (See sig, basically)

Once new cooling arrives, the 7x475 territory would be no issue with this board, from what I can see - I just don't want to try any higher until I'm off of the stock cooler.

Right now I'm running 8x375 for 3.0Ghz, with an 11:16 divider putting the OCZ's at 1100.
This set-up does SuperPi 1M just a hair under 17 seconds.
I'm shooting for sub 14's on air. :D

Thanks for the reply, The board with the 680i chipset is too pricey for me but I'll keep my eye on it to see if the price comes down when i go to order my board. These three seem to be real solid boards with lots of potential. I still kind of have my eye on the DFI, does anyone know if one has more OC ability/features than the other or are they pretty much the same?

Good luck with the SupePi times Evoic...

How many people are getting the Nvidia boards to run reliably with a FSB of 500 MHz?

The P5B Deluxe and the DFI board with the same Intel 965 chipset seem like better high FSB overclockers compared to the Nvidia boards. Any nvidia owners wish to prove me wrong with some screen shots?

To me, an insanely high FSB is a non-issue because of the particular CPU and memory I have.

But, either way, to answer your question......I think it's assumed that the 680i variations hit their ceiling around 450-490 fsb, depending on which version you choose and good 'ol luck of the draw.

hey Bro, hope I'm not too late to the party!

Yes I love my P5B and I've currently got my sig system up to 3.25GHz (465x7) although I can't seem to underclock my RAM to try higher FSB speeds. the lowest ratio it shows in the BIOS is 1:1, nothing lower. If anyone else knows anything about this you can let me know OVER HERE. However, I don't think a 75% CPU overclock and 4x1Gb sticks of DDR2-800 doing DDR2-930 at stock timings is too shabby! :D I'd definitly recommend the P5B deluxe. And pretty much any CPU cooler from a repuatble brand that costs atleast $50! ;) In your basement I'm sure temp won't be a problem. Heck, you might as well leave the side panel off and point a big box fan whle you're at it since noise won't be a concern!

Ever think of just getting a DDR2-1066 kit so you won't have to worry about your RAM's OC ceiling? There's some OCZ over at the egg for $145 shipped after small MIR.

Good times bro, good times...

Thanks for the input bro. Actually newegg has some corsair 1066 that was auto-notify but just got stock yesterday i think I've been wanting and looking for 1066 but it has been just a little too high for me until very recently. The link for the Corsair Ram that i think im going to go with.

As of right now I still like both the p5b deluxe and the dfi board but i'm leaning more towards dfi right now. Like i said earlier I will wait and give this board some more time to prove itself but from what I have seen so far people are hitting over 500fsb without too many problems. If this is the case then i will of course be forced to also test the limits of fsb sanity with my set up as well.

I've also been looking at some p35 chipsets but i think they may be a little out of my comfortable price range.

I'm certain i'm going with the tuniq tower. It may not be the absolute best air cooler but it's darn good.
