Don't have a price range from them yet, but lets just assume its fairly low. His only requirements are that it has a black lcd and black keyboard (black theme in general, ill asume). I figure his son will want to do some gaming on it, (nothing major, probably like rollercoaster tycoon-ish)

need to decide on:
case and everything in it
cheap lcd
kb and mouse
printer
some speakers


I may just direct him to dell as im sure he'll find what he's looking for there, but I just wanted to hear your guy's opinions.

A Dell would be cheaper in the long run. Check out sites like FatWallet and AbleShoppers.
 
I would say go with Dell or a retailer like ABS but if you're set on building one I would recommend going with a lower- end AMD system, like AMD processor 2400 or 2500 and go from there.

What kind of budget are you looking at?
 
a dell is usually going to be the best bang for your buck.... but thats in a retail machine, built for you.....

if you're looking for quality, go to new egg and shop around

A dell may only be 600 for a tower and an LCD and a printer, etc
But they are making a PROFIT on $600!!! That means they have to spend less on the cost to build it, including labor, shipping, customer service, etc. Which makes you ask yourself, how much money are they actually spending on the parts that they put in their systems, and what kind of quality are you getting for that amount of money? Buying in bulk only discounts down so far! BUYERS BEWARE!
 
Well I'm going to give you my $.02.
If his budget is <=$500, then go with a dell. If budget >$500 then you might be able to build a low end amd system with a decent LCD if you find some rebates or deals.
