Ok, I had built a dual 3ghz 800mhz xeon box a good while back, and the motherboard had gone out so all the parts have just been sitting there. I have been needing to build a new home file server/mythtv backend for quite some time, and figured I could use those parts. Basically all I want to use out of that old system is the processors, and I want to use SATA II drives, with linux software raid. I know the processors will be overkill, but will be handy when transcoding video from the mythtv boxes, etc.. So here is my idea, I still have a 74gb raptor that was used maybe 2 weeks that I will use as the OS drive.. and looking at getting 7 or 8 500gb drives for the raid 5 or 6 array.. Here is what I have been looking at getting to plop it all into.. what do you guys think? It seems I will have to buy new memory since this motherboard wants registered EEC which is also overkill but I dont want to lost 800+ dollars I have spent on these processors that are dang near brand new not to mention the heatsinks, and raptor HD.. It shows to have a 2 port and 8 port SATA cards built in.. so that would be perfect for linux software raid... Oh yeah, I will have maybe 2-3 computers pulling music/movies, etc off of it, and 2-3 mythtv boxes dumping video and pulling video/music from it.. will also rip all my dvd's to it for them myth boxes to pull off of, etc.. nothing to hardcore but I like overkill.. I hate waiting on things ;)
