Building New Comp - Please Critique

Well first off I would like to say hello, I just registered. I have been reading the forum for a little while and I think it has a great amount of information that really helped me.

Now that that is done, I will get to the point. I am building a new computer for the first time. I know quite a bit, but not as much as a lot on here, so I would just like some imput on my decisions.

Specs:

Aspire X-Navigator Case black/blue bezel with the 500w PS (that i will Not use)
DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI-DR
Athlon 64 3500+ Winchester core
x1 WD 74GB Raptor
1GB Corsair XMS pc3200 XL latencies 2-2-2-5
x1 BFG Geforce 6800 Ultra Pci-E
Thermalright XP-120 Heatsink with 120 Panaflow (heard it fit this motherboard)
PCPandC 510 SLI Power Supply (considering Enermax Noisetaker 600w SLI also)
APC 1500VA UPS

also other little bits that don't need to be posted ie AS 5 etc

Looks like you're not needing too much help.

I'd go with the PC P&C, in spite of its "lower" power. I have one myself. As God-awfully expensive as they are, they always do the job, and you can impress your friends with the stability of your voltages on each of the rails.

If you have the dollars, I might suggest a second Raptor for RAID0, although there will be some that disagree with that choice. Just something I'd do myself. Have fun.

Everything looks perfect...except, IMHO, the case. It's not a bad case, but with all the other expensive things your buying I think you can affored a "better" case. I recommend the Antec P180 if you don't want a Full-Tower case or a very heavy case. If size and weight don't matter I recommend the Cooler Master Stacker.

P.S. If you decide to go with the Antec P180 you'll have to wait a little since it still hasn't come out. "The P180 will be shipping in Q1 of 2005, and will probably cost around $169 (MSRP)."

Thank you for your input guys.

I have decided to go with the PC P&C power supply. Everyone speaks highly of them and their quality. I also think the high amp single rail is better than lower amp dual rails to supply anything with the power it needs when it needs it.

As for the case suggestions. I actually have looked at that coolermaster stacker, but I can't fit a full tower so that's a no go. If I was setting up a server I would make room though and get one. I really didn't like the antec one. I am gonna stick with the X-Navigator. I have read reviews and it has awesome air flow and cooling for an air cooled system. It might be a little loud but I would rather sacrifice silence than my components. I will also put mesh filters on my intake fans, but will make sure to clean them with a brush so cooling stays level.

As for raid 0, I was going to do it. But the performance increase really doesn't justify the price and high possibility of failure of the raid. Who knows if someday the one isn't cutting it I will slap a second there for raid 0.

Since my main setup seems free of conflicts that is what im gonna build.

Hi all,

I am also building a computer, although, its for crunching numbers instead. I don't need a video card (unless a basic one, to speed things up a bit (radon)).

I wish to overclock the computer and get the highest speed possible. I'm aware of the cooling issues and have already sucessfully used a number of techniques.

What differences will be needed since I won't be looking at graphics? A dual processor sounds good. Do gamers use these to any benefit?

Is there anything wrong with working a computer outside its box lid, besides the dust factor?
