I have not put together a computer for a few years so I am a little behind on the current technology. I have numerous questions. I will be using it mostly as a workhorse doing lots of programming and computational analysis, but also some gaming(counter-strike, battlefield 1942).
AMD Athlon XP 3200+ "Barton", 400MHz FSB, 512K Cache Processor
abit nf7-s2g (nforce2 ultra chipset)
512 corsiar xms ram
9800pro video
+ a case
From my old machine I can use both CD drives and hard drives, so we do not need to worry about those.
Through newegg the above specs are looking at 700$. Worth it? How would you compare what I have there to:

Do you recommend newegg vs. much cheaper distributors tha you can find on pricewatch.com? How would the above computer compare to the dell machine?
Should I try to get DDR2 ram now? The mobo's are expensive, is it that great of a performance increase or should I just get the ddr2 the next time I build a comp, 3-4 years from now.
Do I really need the 9800 pro?
Thanks a lot!
