This is my first time at attempting to build a computer. I have no intention of overclocking it, just a faster computer to play games and do some media editing. Here is the current setup I'm planning to get:


Asus A8V Deluxe + AMD 64 3500+ combo = $454

Cosair 2x512 PC-3200 ram

Total = about $700-$720

I also plan to use my old HDs, CD drives, graphics card, and maybe one of my Kingston ram to make a total of 1280 ram, with two of them running on dual channel (The parts are listed in my sig). But is there any incompablities with this system. Would my HDs work with the Mobos? (i THINK they are IDE drives) Am I getting the right PSU?

Also, should I drop the high end CPU/mobo for a lower priced mid-range mobo/cpu combo and a higher end graphics card? I limited to about 700 bucks.

don't mix and match RAM speeds, just use the 512 Pc3200 sticks.

if there was any way, i might back the 3500 down to a 3200 and spend the money on a gfx card. if you want to play games odds are your old one might not handle it.

what exactly are the specs on the old gfx card?
 
I just put my computer together and from what I found out thru my research is you can save about $80 by going with the AMD64 3000+ . You get great power/speed for the price. That's the chip I got along with a Gigabyte mobo and straight out of the box i was running at 2 GHz. I now have it overclocked to 2.3 GHz though. The Gigabyte mobo came with a nice utility program that allows even newbies(like me) to overclock their CPU while in Windows.
 
I have a geforce 3 Ti200 64mb. The current specs on my computer is in my sig. So you guys suggest that I go with a socket 754 mobo and the AMD 64 3200+? And use any leftover cash for a better graphics card?

Also, I hear news of a new 754 mobos that will support dual channeling and have the new PCI-express slots, should I wait and get those?
