I'm researching building a new computer for my Father. He currently has a very old computer. I believe, off the top of my head, it's a 2 or 3 GHz P4 with like 1GB of ram or something. The thing struggles to load word and Itunes. That said, on to the questions!

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Primary User: Internet usage (Youtube, occasional hulu), Itunes, Very light gaming (He plays Majong on some antiquated program).
Occasional: Light gaming whenever my brother or myself steals the computer for a LAN party (Say, L4D2 with settings on low or medium or WoW with low settings).

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Looking at $500 including OS. Possibly $600 if it will net me a noticeable performance increase in games (I'd be contributing the extra $100 since he wont play games on the computer). Shipping and taxes don't count towards either of these totals, but obviously, free shipping is preferred.

3) Where do you live?
Rome, NY. Pretty much everything will be ordered from NewEgg. House has central air conditioning.

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
OS (Win7 64bit), Case, PSU, Motherboard, CPU, RAM (4GB preferred), Single drive CD/DVD burner, HDD (Medium capacity, have home server set up for storage), Video card (If you can cram one in the budget, if it'd net me a significant increase in performance I will throw $100 in for a total of $600 to upgrade/get a video card.)

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Reusing Monitor, keyboard, mouse.

6) Will you be overclocking?
No, I don't want to deal with trying to phone troubleshoot possible OC issues once he has the computer.

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
He currently has a 19" "Flat" (As in not fishbowl) screen CRT. We have a 21" Widescreen LCD laying around somewhere too so that is also a possibility. No plans that I know of to upgrade past that.

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
February (This month) or March time frame. Not against buying fast for deals.

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
100/1000 Mbit Ethernet is required, current computer only has 10/100 and it's a giant pain to move stuff around my network as such ;)

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If so, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?
I do not already own an OS. As stated above, Win7 64bit Home Prem is to be included in budget.

My attempt at something int he price range is (hopefully) shown below at this link:
https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedWishDetail.aspx?ID=17058447

It does not include a case because at the time of making the wish list I was thinking about gutting his case, but have since decided not to. It is also about $80 over the $500 budget, but includes a video card so is acceptable (as I said, I'll pay the extra $100 or so if it's worth it, which I think it is!). Also, this shows an AMD build, I'm not partial to AMD, but it seemed at the time of making this that AMD had the cheeper low end parts out, I'm not sure how i5 and i3 have changed this situation.

Thank you in advance for your help!

I hit make wishlist public and it put the little check box in the row. Do I need to do anything else? I'll look into it. If I cant figure it out I will just list it out. Sorry!

Holy crap i just realized I didnt put RAM in my wishlist... rofl, how stupid -_- Thanks for reply gwarren007, will check it out when i get home from work :)

Two questions for you:

For $60 more I could break the combo and grab the Athlon X4 630.. Would that be worth it if he were to keep this computer as long as he kept his old one? (Like 8 years.. or more..) I suppose we could upgrade later on but I've built a computer with that in mind before and ended up just building a whole new one because I'm a needy person and needed all the new technology ;)

Also, the 4770 there, any first hand experience with it? Would the 1GB version be worth springing for ($40 more)?

Changing either or both of those things would push me outside my budget so if there's no significant benefit to either performance or longevity of the system I suppose I could live without them..

Let me know what you think.

Nah, it's not worth it to go with the Athlon X4 630 cpu. Gwarrens build is good.

The HD 4770 will fit your needs just nicely. The 1GB version is not worth for your resolution. The extra VRAM would benefit more at higher resolution like 1920x1200+

This build should fit your budget nicely. The triple core Athlon II X3 435 2.9ghz is pretty decent for gaming.

The ComboGuru strikes again. ;)

@ OP: Did you consider a pre-built?

I haven't no, are you talking from Dell or something like that? I'd much rather (even for slightly more cost) build it myself with known quality components and without all the shit they install on the computer, and have all my discs.

If you're talking about a prebuilt without any software installed, that could be a viable option. What did you have in mind?

HardwareGuru thank you for the build! How long do these combo's usually last? My Dad has to decide between the new computer or a new Grill this month lol. Not sure which way he's going to go!

2 to 3 weeks on average.

Dell deals are typically Vostros, which have minimal crapware installed. Regardless, you can decrapify (google it) or simply format and re-install like i usually do, hehe. They typically come with the needed discs as long as you choose that option. A typical dell deal would be a Vostro 220, E5400 or E7500, 2GB - 3GB of RAM, 160GB to 320GB HDD, Win7 Premium, 1yr warranty, 18" - 22" monitor, all for around $380 - $450 + shipping (sometimes w/ free shipping). You can search "vostro" at gotapex.com and see what the current deals are.

If you'd rather build it, thats fine, too... go with HG's build. I just wanted to let you know what's possible with current pre-builts. Custom builds are done by boutiques, which usually charge much more for something you can typically build yourself. Those Vostros aren't exactly great quality, but they aren't bottom of the barrel eMachines crap either. You do get what you pay for, and I've been running many Vostro 200/220 systems for quite a while now, with minimal issues.
