Building first PC - Help!

Hello everyone,

I have just ordered a chunk of new bits to upgrade my parents PC and I wondered if anyone can check that there are no major problems before I bolt it all together...

Motherboard - ASUS A7N8X-X
CPU - AMD Athlon XP3000 (Barton core)
Memory - single 512mB Chip of Geil Value DDR400 (blue heat spreader)
Harddrive - Maxtor Diamondmax +9 (80GB, 8 mB Cache)
Graphic card - Sapphire ATI Radeon 9550 128mB

I would greatly appreciate any input on whether this should be a good system. It's not going to be used for any thing overly intensive I just need something my parents can use reliably.

Looks good to me. Just glanced over everything, and looks like it will run fine. Have fun and good luck!
 
Yeah be careful handling the CPU and other components as ESD (electro-static-discharge) is a big deal and will create problems not immediately apparent. Ground yourself first by touching a large metal unpainted object such as the case, and I would even recommend holding one hand onto the case the entire time while handling the CPU, as it is especially sensitive. Also, read the directions on mounting the CPU and heatsink thouroughly before attempting the install.
 
Yeah, looks good. Now make sure you have a heatsink and fan for that CPU, cooling is very important. ;)
