I wish to build a dual Athlon XP system, but am not sure where to start. I want to keep the price under at least $900. I also know that I want to get a 9800 Pro, and a Coolermaster Wave case, but as for everything else - pricewise mostly - I'm not too sure. Help?

Not true, there are many tutorials for "hacking" an Athlon XP into MP form. Overclockers.com should have a tutorial, at least.

hit up the SMP forums and 2cpu.com for starters
it's probably possible to do if you buy used, somebody may be going opteron and wanting to ditch their athlon setup. otherwise, boards are around 200, it's DDR266 (eh..hehe), and 2xathlon xp procs (if you go barton remember it's native 166FSB instead of 133. careful on the new locked ones too)

if your using a 9800 pro than that means ur building a gaming machine?
and is it correct to say that games suck at utilizing dual processors?
so why not just get a athlon64?

Excellent Point ^^^

Gaming is faster on single processor rigs, when it comes down to it.

So should I ditch the dual mobo, the dual processors, and grab a 64 bit AMD?

Yeh. The extra cost of an additional cpu and the more expensive mobo are not worth the rather marginal performance improvement.

You will have to go with the Athlon MP not XP.

lies

one bridge mod turns xp's into mp's. you can even get bartons and do it, then use the wire trick to OC them, and with the 512k cache, itd rock!

spoken as someone whose never owned one

i had a dual 1700+@2400+ and in everything but games, it totally kicked ass.

I got a dual 1800+mp setup for sale with a Tyan 2460 mobo. has 2 heatsinks as well, I parting with them for $225+ shipping. PM if interested, I have a posting in the FS/FT forums too.
