Hey guys. My dad came up to me this morning saying he need a new computer. He doesn't know his budget, so I'm just going to show him what I've prepared for him off Newegg.

http://secure.newegg.com/app/WishR.asp?ID=1370435

There we go. Is there anything I should change at all? I'm planning on buying all of it today. If anything can be swapped for another equally good, but cheaper item just say so and I'll do it.

Thanks a bunch.

EDIT: Oh yea, I forgot to add where he works and what he does. Well he owns his own printing shop and he needs the computer for some photoshop jobs here and there and basically, just a fast computer.

ok, done and done.

anything else? it looks like everything should work fine together. ill probably order it within the next hour, so any last help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

your dad still plays games?

what? you could try to be a little less productive, but you'd sure have a hard time.

why don't you suggest something based on what I typed?

I hope to god that if I'm ever a father, I'll still have the time to play and enjoy games.

I'd go with a 6600GT instead of the 9600XT if he is playing more recent games. If not, then that 9600XT should be good for stuff from the UT2003 era and before, and also HL2.

God, an intel system. Ok, I think pure ram size would be good for photoshop since latencies of the ram don't matter that much on an intel. Get a couple of these suckers

And then maybe keep that 9600XT if you do it to keep cost down.

if this is going to be your father's game/work computer, re-think about your motherboard, cpu, gpu choices. socket 478 is near obsolete now.

edit: sorry, didn't see your last post. i would suggest this video card instead of the fx5500 for about the same price. leadtek 6200 turbo cache also replace those CAS 3 generic ram with these CAS 2.5 for only a couple dollars more w/ lifetime warrenty.

itr, that motherboard doesnt have pci-e so it wont work with the video card you reocmmended. thanks though.

this isn't a gaming machine at all (saying this to everyone). he just needs it for his printing business. imagine what people would need done there and thats what he needs the computer for. socket 478 would be fine then, right? i understand if you meant to say 478 is getting a little outdated, but completely obsolete?? that sounds a bit off to me.

The state has determined you to be obsolete!

S478 isnt obsolete at all. Just try to get a lot of ram for photoshop

That gfx card (5500) sucks.

Keep the 9600xt or go for a 9600pro. Never buy an Nv FX card, they suck.

okay, from what I read so far, ur preparation looks pretty good (I think a differnt PSU is unnecessary, coolermaster is a rename of a pretty good brand)
Is AMD a possibility? You may find things a little easier power/heat-wise with a Winny AMD64, get different ram...save money on shipping w/ a matched pair...corsair is cheap rite now. Also you'll save $25 by getting a Samsung 160GB drive instead, and you wont lose much. Get a 9550 or 9600 pro (you can get them fanless) which is cheaper and quieter (GPU fans are the loudest components in most computers) also get a non-stock HSF, Zalman and Arctic Cooling are two options that come directly to mind...quiet fans, pretty cool overall.

if i was to build a photoshop/work pc, here are the components i would use:

amd 64 3200+ winchester
dfi nforce 4
nvidia 6200 turbo cache pci-xpress
2gb pc3200 ddr (1gb x 2) - photoshop = ram hog
seagate 200gb
case/psu

total is around $850 + case/psu. you got yourself a much faster cpu, more up to date motherboard/chipset, a quiete hdd (seagate), plenty of ram, and a low/midrange graphics card (unimportant since you don't game).

Or you could buy him a nice laptop with a keyboard and mouse external and be done with it. Perhaps an apple powerbook.

or a mini mac for $499 :)

if he really wants a normal desktop the one you have put together looks nice, but i think an athlon 64 would be a better choice

i run:

IRC, AIM, ZoneAlarm, McAfee Security Center, several Firefox browsers, 3DStudioMAX 7, Adobe Photoshop CS

all at the same time, and the most memory i have ever seen being used is around 600. You don't need more than 1 GB for pretty much anything. I would recommend getting Corsair, Kingston, or Mushkin Value RAM pc3200 instead of the RAM you have there. That video card is more than enough for photoshop purposes; I ran photoshop just fine on onboard video. Though if you found yourself stuck at his office one day, a 9600xt would be nice for some secret gaming while he is busy.

some video card suggestions..

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-458&depa=0

or

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-127-154&depa=0

the 2nd one has 128bit memory which will be faster than the one in the first link with the 64 bit memory but i dont see why your dad would need that fast of an video card. the reason i suggest these cards over a radeon9200 or a geforce4mx is that the directx9.0 capatilibity would be nice when longhorn comes out.

how complex are the photoshop images that he will be creating? he might want to consider 2gb of ram and a 76gb raptor hard drive if he works with complex images, oh and maybe a tablet and that new logitech laser mouse
