Well, my dad decided he wanted a good TV tuner, so I got him a 9800. I looked into the case more, and it had a 350W PSU. Will that be enough? I also got him a 2nd fan, as the case said it can fit another, so I figued why not...I'm worried about cooling, as I dont want my dad to have a bad experince with this computer.

Now guys, as I mentioned in the last thread, this is going to be my first time making a computer. I asked for some advice... Not many people really responded with any words of wisdom :/ Can some of you give me some tips for a first timer, or, better yet give me a link or something? Just so you get a picture of how nuby I am, I don't know what a BIOS on a MoBo is...

the freakiest thing you're going to do is install the heatsink on the CPU. I almost crapped my pants hen I was doing it and my dad was running around like a chicken with it's head cut off yelling about "you're going to break it what a waste of bloody money!". just read the instructions and take it slow. I'd recommend forgetting about the thermal paste and just using the heatpad as thermal paste is typically a temporary solution. though the paste yeilds better cooling results, it's recommended to be replaced ccasionally, as it disperses over time. A thermal pad will run like 2-3 degrees hotter but in the long run who really cares about 2-3 degrees.

Everything else looks jolly good and i wish you luck with your first build.

PS: when installing windows I'd make a 20 GB NTFS partition for windows and another NTFS partition of the rest for your media so when you format your OS you don't lose all your mp3s, movies and what not.

20GB is far too much for an XP partition. I'd recommend around 10GB.

i take it pops doesn't care about looks? if he does (or if you do and you're gonna be seeing this thing a lot) then i'd change the case choice.

also... you're going to want to pick up a hauppage 250whateveritis if you want this thing to be able to pretend it's a tivo-- the aiw's don't record, just play. make sure that dvd burner can also handle cd's (i think it should... but i've never dealt with anything more upscale in that dept. than a combo drive) and lastly, drop the professional edition and go with either media center edition or xp home. you really don't need anything better, and it's more expensive to boot.
