If he can spend $150 more you can get a much better Athlon 64/Venice 3000+/6600GT PCI-E system with a DVD+RW and 80GB SATA drive.

I agree with him, He may not be a gamer right now, Only because he cant.. (PC To slow or no PC at all) once he gets a PC. Later down the line he'll regret not getting something a lil better. Right now he may just want a PC. Who wouldnt, anything is better then nothing..

Just Think what happens when that New PC factor wares off whats he left with.. LOL AIM/solitare............................................Pinball if hes lucky.. :D :D

AMD Clawhammer 3000+ for $136 from Chiefvalue.com
Motherboard from this list, I'm fond of DFI.
1x512MB memory, try for 2.5-3-3, 2.5-2-2, or 2-2-2 timings if you can get it.
Probably stick with the onboard NIC.
Dell might have a good deal on LCDs if you look in to it.

my 2 cents would be to a.) get a western digital hard drive instead of a Maxtor, and b.) get a faster previous generation card instead of a worthless 6200. I bet a 9700 pro would beat the pants off that 6200 for darn near the same price (used of course).

Ditch the socket A and the Barton. A 754 mobo and Sempron will cost pretty much the same and will be around longer. Probably the best value now. For a few dollars more a 939 and an Athlon 64 will "future proof" him...whatever that actually means.

If he's not gaming, save some bucks and get a mobo with integrated graphics. He can always buy a graphics card later. Either an AGP or PCI express mobo would be fine. Most decent mobos come with integrated ethernet, so ditch the network adapter.
