From a buddy,

"I want to build that Athlon 64 system to place in that new case I got. Here is what I'll need:

3200+ CPU/Heatsink?
Motherboard $150 or less
5950 Ultra 256 ram video card (which brand and why) $400 or less.
I am going to use one of the Powmax power supplies 400-500 watt
I'm going to probably use the 1GB of ram out of my ATI machine and will put some cheaper stuff (512mb) in it's place.

I think that's all the parts I'll need. I have an extra hard drive I can use in it.

What are your thoughts?

-Jerry"

I dont think he knows theres a 300+64 out, so mabey that one. AND BEFORNE ANYONE SAYS SOMETHING, ITS FOR A LAN CENTER SPONSERED BY NVIDIA...so dont question the 5950ultra. (he has a 9800pro in his 1 ATI rig"

Looks ok to me,

If he wants to build right now, the 3200 is the best bet over the 3000. The 3000 only has 512 LVL 2 cache where the 3200 still has the 1MB like the FX-51.

I haven't seen too many heatsinks for the 754 pin A64s yet. Personally, I would like to see that Gigabyte heatpipe cooler adapted to fit the A64.

The chipsests for the athlon 64s are still in their infancy. The next few months are going to provide many more choices as well as the first revision of the NForce3 chipset (current version is slowest of the 3 chipsets on the market). But if he wants to build now, get either the ABIT board with the VIA chipset or find a manufactuer you trust and get the SIS chipset (best performing).

Couldn't tell you what brand of NVidia 5950 to get... I'm boycotting Nvidia graphic cards right now.

Go with the Alpha cooling solution for Opteron/AMD64.

I'd say to stay away from Powmax powersupplies, I've used them in the past and they tend to not last long. Antec = teh win. Also, if it for an Nvidia blah blah blah, you should be getting an Nforce board and not a KT800 board...so make sure you do that.

Yeah, they do suck. But you said this is something sponsored by Nvidia or whatever....if you went by performance, you certainly wouldn't be using a 5950 Ultra.

hey its not my system, dont preach to me. Besides he ony has to use NVIDIA cards, and i know he wants a 5950 to play NASCAR2003 sim. Because I have my 5900nu clocked well above 5950 speeds and it works his 9800pro in NASCAR. Thats the only game i beat him in, but its the only game he plays....Who knows i may get a 9800pro out of the deal... :)
