What are the components I need for the cheapest 8 core system?
What mobo, ram and cpu?
 
Cheapest? I dunno about that, but read up on Skulltrail. That seems to be the most promising option for an octocore system.

What are you going to be doing with it?

Why the hell do you need a 8 core system? Quad-core is overkill for 95% of users. So Octocore is therefore overkill for 99.99% of people.
 
You can Pick up a pair of 45nm Quad Core Xeons for about $300 each and a Dual 771 Montherboard for $300-$400. Memory will costs will eat you alive though. Budget at least $1200+ for the Board, Processors and Mem.

You CAN Sli on this too.. So Figure another $550 for 2 8800GTs

Makes sense, i think you could kill 8Cores with that, ive done some fun things in Max and my quad is still struggling... Although 99% of the time its RAM runnign out.

Here is an article on what to expect; (Nehalem is also HyperThreading too)

The Nehalem-EX is the one to look out for, with 8 Cores, Hyperthreading, so 16 Threads. Add two of those and... Well. WOW...

No. Dual socket boards are all going to be server boards. They're all going to be S771, requiring server CPUs, and they're all going to require ECC RAM. There's no way around this, with the potential exception of things like Skulltrail, which is not yet available.
 
5000 and 5400 series boards require FB-Dimms, 5100 series boards require Registered/ECC DDR2.

SLI will not work except on Skulltrail, unless you have Quadros.
 
For your needs, Skulltrail might be what you're looking for. However, there are no concrete release dates at the this time. From what I've read so far, SkullTrail is being released sometime in Q1 2008 though it could be pushed back.

So if you really want an Octo-Core system, you're gonna have to spend a lot more money for a server setup.
