I am thinking I want to go opteron (dual core!) and I am looking pretty hard at the newegg deal for the EVGA MB and 7800GT as shown in this combo:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813188002

Here are my questions:

1: Which is the best opteron for OC'ing if I am planning on OC'ing it a bit (ie- i have watercooling anyway, may as well push a bit)?
2: What is the Zen of OCing opterons on this motherboard? can i push multipliers much? i have cheap ram that probably won't go very high on the bus speed, so can i push the CPU bus independently of RAM and system bus speeds?
3: is there anything else I should be aware of for this? any thoughts, links, advice, flames etc would be very, very welcome! I don't feel like wasting money. :)

Thanks [H] experts, you kick a ridiculous amount of ass!

Sup!

Friend of mine grabbed that board you are looking at and has said that he has been "pleaseantly surprised" at the overall quality and stability of the board. I used his pc a few times and it seems close to mine in terms of speed. He's running a 4000+ and has gotten some decent OC's out of the chip and board. As for the opteron question, my favorite would have to be the Opy 170. Its a nice dual core chip that oc's very well and comes with the full 1mb of cache on each chip. Knowing that your ram might not be up to the task, you will be able to use multipliers and such to keep your ram around 200 and still come close to around 2.6 on this chip: 10 x 260fsb = 2600, 4/5 mem multiplier = 208mhz ram. (you milage may vary but 2.6 would be a realistic goal given the history of these chips). Hope this helps a little.

wow okay so i can use dividers on the ram speed!! that's a big thing right there i was unfamiliar with...

looks like the 165's are great overclockers as well from what people are saying, hitting the same #'s as 170s, so i THINK (and i could be wrong) i may as well save some $$ and just go with the 165.

Sure! The only difference in that chip is the 1.8 stock speed over the opy 170's 2.0. I've heard great things from that chip also, just never had any personal expereince with it. Might have to use the 2/3 mem multiplier and see how it goes :) If you do grab an Opty 165 (if you can find one) let me know how it goes!

i most certainly will.

ordering from newegg right now.
:)

opty 165 in stock
evga mb and vid card
we'll see how it does with my gig of 3 sticks of various kinds of ram, too :)

specifically that one - i've read that the "toledo" cores overclock best but... uh... this is a denmark core and i haven't seen any marked toledo.

any quick thoughts before i drop 700 dollars on my cpu/mb/vid?

yeah i figured it out, realized i forgot how to read somewhere along the line or something :)

thank you for all your help guys! sytem is ordered.
