Building a *silent* computer

Yeah Dell computers are NOT quiet. I just bought a Dell a couple months ago. It was a P4 3.0 w/ HT, 1024 mb Dual ram 400 mhz, Radeon 9800 pro, Seagate HD, some shitty 250 watt power supply. The thing is ridiculously loud. I'm talking I leave my room, shut the door, and can still hear it. All the brand new nice components are laying on my floor, the case is laying somewhere smashed down my basement steps, and I'm in the process of transferring all the guts into a quiet case.

The constant whine that this drive put out was easily the loudest component in my system. I put up with it for a few weeks until I bought a Seagate 7200.7 Plus (120GB, 8mb cache, ATA100). A huge difference. I now use the WD as a backup drive, and it stays off until needed.

I recorded some short 158KB MP3 files. You gotta hear the difference for yourself.

Agree. WD makes the loudest HD's on the market. I had to buy a SilentDrive to make my WD800JB tolerable, and it's still the second most offending component in my system, behind a whiny top exhaust fan I've got to get around to replacing..

watercooled and some way to isolate the HD, becasue thats all i can hear anymore;)

the case has a solid thick aluminum door that drastically reduces the noise of CD drives, the case sides are already covered in sound deading material.

the front intake fans are routed to the bottom of the ps to keep intake fan noise to a minimum

i have this case and a watercooled setup . with all my fans turned down all i hear is my raptor HD
