Building a new rig for ~$800

I'm helping a friend build a new rig. Since I haven't looked at computer parts in a long time, I'd like some opinions on what I have picked for him. He doesn't want to spend much over $800.

Motherboard: Abit NF7-S

CPU: Athlon XP 3000+

Graphics card: Sapphire Radeon 9800 PRO, 128MB

Memory: Two 512MB sticks of Crucial PC3200

HD: 80GB WD HD, 7200RPM

DVD Burner: NEC 8X Black DVD+RW/-RW Drive

Case: APEX Super Case Series Black Mid-Tower Case with Front Door and 400W Power Supply

Extra case fan: Thermaltake "Blue-Eye" 80mm Case Fan

And some Arctic Silver

This all adds up to $799.47 on Newegg.

My main concern is the PSU that comes with the case, but it has mostly positive reviews.

He already has a keyboard, mouse, and monitor.

I doubt I'll be able to convince him to spend an extra $40 on a HSF. He isn't going to overclock or anything.

if he isnt going to overclock, get him an A64 system so he doesnt need to overclock to get nice performance, they arent that much cheaper either

and, one 512 of memory should be enough to start with

get him a mobile barton, and a new HS then just raise the fsb to 200, and be done with it. that will cost less then a 3000

Overclocking for other people is a big no-no. There's no reason why the stock HSF won't work just fine for that system.

I think the setup you've got is pretty good and doesn't require any overclocking. The only other suggestion I'd have is to consider using an IS7 and a 2.8E P4, should be roughly the same price off of newegg.

Teh PSU is gonna kill ur system man, 12A in the +12v rail is n3g. You'll need something better, I bet you money it wont boot or will crash often.

18A on the +12v rail is a minimum nowadays, especially for these high powered processors.
