Well I finally got my wish, my fiance's been making me hold off getting a new computer for years now, and finally we have some spare cash and christmas is coming and I don't want anything else but a computer. I've been asked to put together a list of components I'd like and send them to herself, where she will go pick them up and then I can put it together.

I've put together below a system to start, but I'm wide open to suggestions as I know lots of people here on the forums have a better idea about this stuff then I do.

All products will be purchased from Memory Express. There are other stores in Edmonton that sell parts, but none with the service these guys have. All prices are taken from that site.

Specifically, I've always went with Athlon, and I'm leaning towards the quad core just because of the price. I've heard they run really hot and loud, and that the new Athlons are pretty slick. This is going to be a gaming only computer, so whatever works best for that.
Intel - Core™2 Quad Processor Q6600 2.4GHz w/ 2x4MB Cache
ILC: 735858191562 SKU: MX15884
1 $299.95

As far as mobos go, I've always went cheap, cheapest mobo was the one I bought. Went on a different path, looked for one that will do it all, but won't break the bank. This was a pretty solid choice, but once again, mobo's aren't my fortey (sp?)
eVGA - nForce 680i LT SLI T1 w/ DualDDR2 800, 7.1 Audio, Gigabit Lan, 1394, Dual PCI-E x16 SLI
ILC: 843368000868 SKU: MX18708
1 $179.95

As the trend continues, memory at 2gigs is the minimum. Thinking of pushing to 4, but I think that might be an upgrade for the future as I will still be using XP for now. I've always went with Kingston, but there are some solid memory companys out there that are way better then Kingston.
CRUCIAL - BallistiX 2GB PC2-6400 Dual Channel DDR2 Kit (2 x 1GB)
ILC: BL2KIT12864AA804 SKU: MX14500
1 $114.95

This is a done deal, not much to talk about here. Could have got the 1TB drive but I don't really need the room.
SEAGATE - 500GB Barracuda 7200.10 SATA II w/ NCQ, 16MB Cache
ILC: ST3500630AS SKU: MX12927
1 $119.95

Once again, something I'm more familiar with. Nvidia is my lifes blood, so I won't turn my back on them now. Was looking at the GTX but the price difference doesn't make me happy.
eVGA - e-GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB SuperClocked PCI-E w/ Dual DVI, HDTV-Out
ILC: 843368000493 SKU: MX16165
1 $299.95

Is it worth getting the Instant repair warranty. This is with Memory Express, really solid company in Edmonton and Calgary. I've never bought anything like that before, but might be worth it.
Sub Total $1,014.75
IPR Warranty $0.00
Shipping $ --.--

Total $1,014.75

If your wondering about all the EVGA choices on there, I've heard lots of good things about them. I'm partial to Gigabyte, but couldnt' find anything with Memory Express. I looked into prices from the US for this and ME is very comparable, even with a site like Newegg.

One last thing I need to decide on is a new keyboard. Current one is 5 years old, and in desperate need of retirement. Everything else I've been slowly upgrading. New dvd drive, sound card, case, psu, mouse, monitor has been bought already.

Critiques, slander, thumbs up w/e are welcome.

gts 320 maybe shaky for use later on as a lack of onboard memory may hurt it.everthing else looks solid.forgot, what size monitor are you using and it looks like a gaming machine.i seriously doubt it will be used for e-mail lol.peace

http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2007/10/05/nvidia-kills-8800gts-320mb (NVDIA 320MB cards EOL)

Anyone heard any truth to this, is this fact or rumour? I've looked around but haven't seen anything to verify it.

Definitly a gaming machine, no email going on on this thing. I haven't been able to touch any of the games that havent' come out for the last couple of years (limited to DX8 with my GF4800, i know i know, laught it up). Monitor is a 20" Samsung, might be upgrading to a 24" at a later day, we'll see. Might save up for one of those Westinghouse 42" LCD's.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'm not 100% on the Q6600, seems like overkill when I don't think most games will support more then 2 cores (heard crysis will be, but thats it).

Also I've been looking around the forums and reading up on reviews and I'm still no closer to knowing anymore about the ram. I've seen so many different configuratinos for 2gigs of ram and none of them seem any better then others. I picked the Crucial above just because of rave reviews it got. For all I know I could pick something different and be way better off.

Even if the 8800GTS 320 are eol, they use the same drivers as the rest of the 8800-family series. I doubt support will be dropped from them. Heck, they still make 7-series drivers.

The 680i LT is kind of a hybrid 650/680 board. Don't know if that matters to you or not.

Didn't know that. Not sure how that would affect me, I could go one model up and get this one. I'm still doing some digging on the mobos, but so far eVGA is looking like a solid choice.

not saying that they are fixing to drop the 320ng version, just that i have read in the forums that the 320 may start having problems with texture memory as resolutions start at 19x12 and upward.sorry if it sounded as if i was saying they were to stop making 320 version:eek:
ps the inquire is full of idiots

As games are pushing the envelope of performance, of course what was considered top-of-the-line will be not-so-top-of-the-line. Pretty soon we'll see 2GB and 4GB DDR16-billion cards and people would be like... I can't beleive I thought 768MB and 1GB cards was alot of memory!

I remember my ATI 8MB RagePro TURBO! I thought I was so leet!

Yes, pretty soon the 8800GTS 320.. even the 8800 Ultra will eventually become bottom of the barrel performance. I'll be able to pick up a 8800Ultra for like $50 someday and people would laugh at me.

For a 20", the 640MB would be better if you like to turn up the detail. Otherwise, the 320MB will be fine. If you plan on getting a 24" sometime soon, upgrade to the GTX. If it won't be for a year or so, just upgrade your card when you upgrade your monitor.

The ballistix are the best 2GB kit around, but you don't really need them for a Q6600. They're the best because they can OC high, but you don't need high speed ram to OC a Q6600. Just get some cheaper 2GB DDR2-800 kit if you can find one. If not, stick with the ballistix.

You don't really need the 680i SLI LT board, so ditch it for a P35 board instead. Look into one of these, depending on your needs. Go with whichever you can find at the ME shop you speak of (I'm too lazy to change the links, hehe):

$91 - abit IP35-E LGA 775 Intel P35 ($20 MIR)
$99 - Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35
$130 - Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R LGA 775 Intel P35
$125 - abit IP35 LGA 775 Intel P35 ($25 MIR)
$133 - Asus P5K LGA 775 Intel P35 Express
$150 - Asus P5K-E/WIFI-AP LGA 775 Intel P35
$170 - Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 Rev. 2.0 LGA 775 Intel P35
$180 - abit IP35 Pro LGA 775 Intel P35 ($20 MIR)

Keyboards are personal preference, so go with what you like.

Also, if you plan on OC'ing, I strongly recommend getting a Tuniq or Ultima 90... again, ignore the links, get whichever is available at ME, since I'm too lazy to change the links:

$45 - Tuniq Tower 120 CPU HSF
$46 - Thermalright Ultima 90 CPU HS + Panaflo Hydrowave 92mm Fan FBA09A12M - Z ($3)
$55 - Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme CPU HS + Scythe S-Flex Fan SFF21E ($15)

More importantly, what PSU do you plan on using with this build?

EDIT: you posted while I was typing :p

One question I have that I haven't been able to answer myself is power.

I currently have http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX14190(ME).aspx and I'm hoping its enough to handle all the components above, plus maybe SLI in the future. I've looked around, but really have no way to tell if it will be able to or not.

The 32A on the combined +12V rail on that enermax is more than enough for your system. You don't really need SLI, so don't worry about it.

SLI is only needed for high resolution 3D rendering. So, if you have or plan on getting a 1920x1080 LCD or higher, and want to game on it at native resolution, then keep SLI as an option. Otherwise, theres no need for it. A single GTX is still fine for a 1920x1080 (or 1920x1200) LCD screen, and more cost effective than an 8800GTS SLI setup. SLI as an upgrade path isn't worth it unless, again, a large LCD is in the future plans. There should always be a better single card solution, and you could sell your old card to help offset the cost.

Thanks thats solid advice. I'll stick with the 320MB, don't think the 24" is coming anytime soon.

I'm too scared to OC right now. I've thought about trying it, and may give it a test shot on my old system to learn how to do it before I try anything on a brand new system. Seems like a lot of people on the boards overclock as a general rule, but as it something I haven't tried before, I'll probably be running default for a while. I've tried reading up on OCing and trying to learn more about it, just have to find some hardware I don't mind frying if I mess up.

Thanks for the links, thats much appreciated. The gigabyte board seems like a good choice. But why don't I need the 680i. I've obviously got some research to do for myself here, as I thought the 680i chipset was the latest greatest thing. I'm seeing rave reviews for the P35 boards, and I'm considering them, but I need to understand the 'why' better.

Keyboards are personal preference, so go with what you like.
QFT, looked around, this is one I'll have to take care of myself, need to go mash on some keyboards and see what feels good.

Personally I'm looking for quiet. I figure with the setup I'm planning power won't be an issue out of the box, so as long as its quiet and doesn't sound like a vaccum beside my desk I'll be happy.

More importantly, what PSU do you plan on using with this build?

Great advice again, thanks for taking the time to reply. You've given me much to think on, and even more to go and research.

680i SLI is the latest and greatest as far as SLI chipsets go. If you don't need SLI, don't bother with it. The P35 Express chipset from Intel runs cooler and has less problems (its more stable), generally speaking. The X38 is Intel's crossfire chipset.

I've got a similar setup like the one you have planned. The only difference is that i have the 8800GTX, and 4GB of ram with a thermalright 120 extreme plus the assorted peripherals, monitor, ect.. If you can ever afford it, i'd eventually go 24" on the monitor as it really makes a whole lot of difference in playing games. (At least for me)
Once you go from the lower resolutions to 1900x1200 and above, you'll never want to go back...lol

You should try a 30" at 2560x1600, lol.

Be careful with that 680i board... You listed a price of $179, make sure you're getting the latest revision of the board. Look at this thread http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1233242&highlight=q6600+680i

It's talked about in this thread that he didn't get the latest revision so it wouldn't jive well with the Q6600...

Look here for the latest one: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16813188013

I too was trying to figure out the difference between the different 680i boards so I took the top one and am about to buy it today myself.

Unless you're going to use SLI you should not get a 680i board. You might overclock a 680i to the same level as a P35 but chances are it will be a monumental pain in the ass to get there.

Looks like the P35 is the only one that will be compatible with the future Intel cpu (correct me if I'm wrong) and I don't plan an SLI setup anytime in the near future after this is built. I'm looking for as much longevity out of this system as I can get.

At the time I get a 24" who knows what vid cards will be out there. For now the GTS will handle all my gaming needs fairly well.

@Grimmda: Thanks for the heads up, this makes me even more leary about the 680i boards.

This is exactly what I needed to know. The "Runs cooler and has less problems (its more stable)" is what I'm looking for. I'm not planning to hook this thing to nitrogen and see how far I can take it. I want to get the parts home, hook it up, tweak it a lil bit and then start gaming. And I don't want to have to mess around with RMA, or have any stability problems.

Looks like as far as the mobo is concerned I need to find a good P35, probably going to go with the Gigabyte board enginurd suggested, even if I can't find it at memory express.

Thanks for all the advice guys, much appreciated.

No prob. Good luck with the build... post some pix when you're done! ;)
