Building a lego case

I'm interested in building a lego case for my computer.

Anyone got any ideas on how I can make the components stay in?(super glue, screw them in, etc.)

Looks like I'm using my old "learning" computer (my brother taught me how to upgrade things w/ that computer), so looks like those components will be in there for good (it's an old 486, with less than a gig of space, a floppy, 28.8kpbs modem, and a 1x DVD rom drive (which doesn't work).

I'm thinking of just building the case, and figuring out the rest of the things later (to see what I have to work with).

remember to glue it together once you've decided and tested the finished construction
otherwise it'll be a little weak if you want to move it around

I just looked into this last week. For a tower the size of my current Chieftec Dragon, I estimated about $200 for legos themselves.

Of course, it really depends what you are making, and what size you want. I wanted to build a whole tower out of legos, instead of just covering the outside of the case with them.

Check out bulk prices on parts at lego.com and estimate how many you need and how much it will cost. Unless you plan on building one with legos you already own, that are multiple colors....it can be expensive. I needed over 1000pcs of Black 2x4 bricks...

if you want to see what not to make it look like, check out the rig of the month in the Feb. Maximum PC.
link

now if that is the look you're going for, I'm sure I can get my 4 yr old niece to supervise.

thats the only case i can see that would say "assembly required" on it:D

i dont think it would cost that much though, besides the components inside it, legos are cheap these days to just buy the bricks and not sets

OMG I HAD THE LEGO SET THAT WAS USED IN THE GAY PC!!!!!!!

Well, for a typical Mid-tower....

50cm high x 45cm long x 20cm wide (cases may variate from these dimensions)

2x4 lego bricks are 31.8mm long, 15.8mm wide, and about 13mm high.

Thats about 40+ bricks high, by about 15 long

40x15 = 600 bricks (give or take 50 due to interlocking on corners) For just one side panel.

Bags of 50 from lego are $6.99. Avg price per brick I found on bricklink.com was about ~.10 per brick....$60 for one side panel is $$$$$

It gets very expensive, very fast. I was also looking at building a clear lego window into a black lego side panel, clears are a little more expensive for new un-yellowed bricks.

If youve got any cheaper sources, I'd love to know! :D

If getting all new Legos, Maybe you wanna go with a theme of colors...Or are you planning on just going crazy with all the colors...

See Adri, what did I tell you?

You get a lot more help here than at GS....

Not to go terribly off-topic, but i thought that "Rig Of The Month" was horrible... I honestly don't know what they are thinking... Those other mini-itx lego PC's were much better looking in my opinion.... i mean there are wires and ribbon cables popping out of the damn thing! Sorry if I'm off-topic, but i needed to vent.

I already have legos, but looks like it won't be enough.

But $200 worth of legos, damn! *reality hits Adri1456* I rather get a new case than build this! Looks like I have to reschedule this project.

I start college next week, and looks like I have to spend a lot on books and clothes.

Is there any "cheaper" alternatives like legos (megablocks or something?) If not, then I'll have to start this project after I finish college (in 18 months).

i agree that that lego case in MaxPC sucked.

anyways, if you have a Lego Store near you, you can buy whatever color bricks by the pound. Not sure what the cost is, but it'd be cheaper than buying a bunch of sets.

I've always wanted to do this, but with a bit of experimenting. It occured to me that what i thougth was a big lego collection was not nearly enough to make a standard atx case.

those are wicked.

Dont rush through it or it will end up looking like one of those God-awful mods where people build a pc inside a cardboard box.

I think you should keep one thing in mind though...There are a good amount of Lego computers out there so you wanna make something that sets it apart...

Like the one in MaxPC....

I need to let it go...

I would like to also agree that the lego case was a joke. It wasnt even specialy modded or anything to fit the parts... very poor ROTM
