I've heard recommended 170 dual core AMD chips, but I've been out of the loop for a while. Is the cost on these really around $425.?

I'm also looking for some guidence on the rest of the system:
recommendations on
- the case
- motherboard
- power supply
- processor
- heatsink/fan
- case cooling fans
- ram
- hard drive
- 1Gbit NIC

nothing else is needed, no video or audio, or DVD drives, etc. the cheaper I go, the more systems I can get...these will be just for 3dsmax rendering, using vray, MR and final render.

Tnank you for any time you can spare...I'll continue to search the forums, but I've found the recommendations differ based on the system, whether it is for gaming, home use, etc....I thought I'd ask given mine will be for rendering.

Hey man, you could check out the smaller dealers for that Opty 170. I got mine from Dave Graham for a less than that. He's one of the few sources where you can find out the stepping beforehand. His website is www.flickerdown.com and it should have his phone # there.

I think alot of folks around here have brought from him.

For the rest of your gear, you'll have to give us a budget to work with, and then I'll be glad to help you narrow it all down! I'm in the process of building the system in my sig. should be up by this weekend! woohoo!

HD's - i would get as small as you can - 40g ? 20g? 10g..

ram - do the nodes use more RAM or CPU ? if so 128mb in each..

what O/S you using on the nodes?

get mobo's with built in video - get all items the same of course, so you have 1 image and image it to all the drives and be done :D


i would maybe consider your own rack mount - no cases needed - just build a tower to mount them all.
 
I heard that Intel was actually better at rendering workloads, however this was a year or two ago, so I am not sure if it still holds true.
 
Sorry for posting an imcomplete question. These will be just for 3dsmax 8 rendering on tight deadlines, using vray, MR and final render, all latest versions...I will be running win 2k sp4 or xp pro sp2 for os. Residence is CA, USA, computer expertise is intermediate, budget between $800-$1,500 per system (hopefully). Thanks for the replies so far.
 
there were 170's on monarch for 350 a bit ago. watch for deals on there, they like to play with their prices it seems. or get into daves long queue lol.
