I'm new to all this. I just recently decided to ditch my oldschool 166mhz piece of crap and build a PC. I have about $500 budget, which I know isn't great, and am looking to put something together thats good for gaming and everything else a college student needs. If anyone can direct me in what I should be looking for or where to purchase the best computer package, I'd be would be grateful

I'm guessing your mean $500 US and you have a monitor.

I'd go with something like this..

Chenming Mid-Size Case - $33.50

AMD Athlon XP Barton 2500+ $91.00

MSI K7N2-L Delta Motherboard - $61.00

Western Digital 80GB SATA - $69.25

Kingston 512mb DRR3200 - $75.00

ATI Radeon 9600XT - $164.00

Onboard sound is good enough. All the hardware above comes to $493.75 without tax, and it doesnt include an OS. Windows XP Home is $90 and XP Pro is $141. I know its over your budget by a bit, you can lower the price a bit if you can get the ATI Radeon 9600pro or the ATI Radeon 9600se.

On TechTV.com i saw something like "Yoshi's $500.000 Gamming PC" maybe you should read that. I can't find the link now :(

$164 for a 9600XT is high. This 9700 pro for $164 will slaughter the 9600XT

Good point I forgot about the 9700 pro. :)
