Let me start off by saying i _hate_ having the PSU over the HSF.
I like to see my processor/heatsink, not hide it behind my psu.
Therefore, my simple goal here is a tiny ITX gaming rig.

The GPU would probably stay alot cooler of you rotate the case CCW 90° so the PSU is on the bottom. It would result in the same shape either way. Just a thought.

What about flipping it all 180 degrees so the gpu is at the top?
I haven't planned any intakes or blowholes yet, so I'm open to ideas regarding that.

You have enough room next to the mobo for the PSU, SG09 style.
 
I really like your last version being nearly a real cube compared to all those ITX cases out there claiming this for a title. Enough space for HDD, cable etc. on the PSU side.

i'm leaning toward this also.
I can easily make it a perfect cube dimension-wise.

The fact that the case is broken into two "halves" should give some decent cable management and whatnot.

I'm a bit torn on the orientation of the PSU though... do you think i should have the fan pulling hot air off the back of the motherboard?
 
Naaa...don't think that it would be necessary to have fan pulling air from back of MB. Look at all those cases with half an inch of noise insulation on case inside. Also there would be not that much room for sucking air in so PSU might get louder I guess.

now comes the task of trying to find out what cooler fits the itx mobo without hitting gpu/ram... and is short enough to fit.
needs to be shorter than the vga card is wide.
 
There are lots of them. Scythe Kozuti, Scythe Shuriken and Big Shuriken or Samuel 17, Thermalright AXP-100 or Noctua L9i. Feel free to chose - unless you only want Low Profile graphics.

i like the axp-100, the six heatpipes seems like it would outperform the 3 that the scythe and others use.
 
I made some paper models of the mobo GPU and psu... It let me see physical representations of the size of everything.
If I do a cube... Its most likely going to be 10x10x10. Height will actually he 11 because it needs feet to get it off the desk.
If I do the sg09 style, its possible to do 10x8x7, maybe smaller. It'll also cut cost by about $50.
 
So, the third design, while interesting is a pita is put together compared to the other two.

Here is the latest design that seems cost effective and should still cool good.

size is 9.5" x 5.5" x 11"

The cube is looking the most promising- it has the least con's about it.

SG09 style pros:
size is nice and tiny, albeit atypical.
SG09 Style cons:
psu cooling is far from optimal
asthetically unpleasing from side.
cable management

ATX style pros:
simplicity.
looks pleasing from side view.
ATX style cons:
height is more than it needs to be.
boring.
cable management

CUBE pros:
most likely best cooling performance
pleasing size/scale
looks good from side panel
cable management
CUBE cons:
not as small as possible
construction cost is about 15% higher

So with all this figured out- Im thinking i will build the cube.
It's the most exciting to me personally.

it'll be roughly $150 worth of materials to make it.

put feet on the case so air goes in the bottom. this is not rocket science.
 
personally I would do the SG09 style (more like SG05 really, since you can go shorter with the PSU on it's side) since it's smallest.

the cube is cool but it's basically a Prodigy on it's side. Assuming a long GPU that would leave a lot of space at the front, which the Prodigy uses for a ton of 3.5" drives. If you don't need that many drives (or radiators or whatever) then no need for all that space.
 
Sg05 uses PSU over the hsf which is what I want to avoid first and foremost.

the two fans (front of case, back of case) are 92mm.
I can stuff a 120mm fan in the front, but not sure if it's needed.
Cable management will be cake.

You can see the decent amount of room left for hard drives on the PSU side of the case.

The SFX psu can pull air from outside the case or off the back of the motherboard. There's like 25mm of space between it and the mobo tray

im open to cooling options.

The render uses two 92mm fans on the case. The gpu will have it's own intakes... so it's more or less closed from the rest of the system.

The idea for the cpu is a heatsink fan combo that pushes air from front to back, right in line with the 2 case fans.

I can cut lexan/pc/acrylic as well just by switching out the plasma torch with the router spindle.

Nice work! I like that all the wiring should be very easy to hide away in the PSU area, keeping the motherboard area nice and tidy.

yeah, not as small, but more practical.

the cube size is limited to the length of the GPU card.
in this case... 10" is small as i can realistically get.

Have you thought about making the front fan 120mm so there's the option of using a closed water cooling kit?
 
so i was wrong. a 120mm fan will fit perfect on the front of the case. that should balance out the exhausting air from the psu. so... 120in, 2x90mm out.

here is the 120mm in the front. looks like more than enough clearance for a all in one setup.

the psu has the texture of an atx model, but it's sized as silverstone's sfx modular unit.
