Building A Case - Meterials

Hi again,

I have been debating what to build my case out of, I was initially going to use steel since it's pretty tough, but I'm thinking of getting alluminium and having it anodized, I assune I want type 2?

Is it worth it, since I expect this will cost me around £120-200+ to do. Where as using steel, I could just spray paint it.

My basic design is box, which I'm planning on having made at a forge, having them cut it and bend it into shape, after which I will spot weld it together.

Any suggestions?
 
spot welding will look bad unless you spend a lot of time smoothing it over, also a steel case will be ludicrously heavy, and harder to work with than aluminum. if you really want to do it, do aluminum, take the time to plan out the case and where everything will go, and then start ordering materials and putting it together
 
You can paint aluminum and it dissipates heat better than steel.
 
Alluminium needs to be anodized right? So I need to find a company that can do that (UK based) I saw a website that did cases for £99 but I can't find the link now

By spot welding I mean, the box will have tabs, to join the sides to the base and rear. I have a few choices, rivets, glue, weld. I think spot welding it (welding small spots ) would be best, keep in mind, no one's going to see the welded parts since their inside.
 
No, Aluminum can be left raw. Rather than welding, if you plan well, you can do rivets to hold everything together. Welding Aluminum is a PITA compared to steel.
 
I'd pick up some aluminum square bars, make the frame, and hold them together with either bolts... or weld them.

Then, PAINT that with a good rust paint.

Then use aluminum panels for the outside, and have them anodized.
 
I'll hopfully be getting some experienced help, from my brother in laws father who just so happens to be in the engineering trade. So the welding should be in theory covered, or whatever finally joins it all together.

Anodizing - Do it yourself or Get it done professionally? I've been searching for companies that do it, they all seem industrial kinda places maybe that's just the trade. I've read a couple of places that say DIY Anodizing is easy, and others that say it's much better to get it done professionally.
 
Depends what you're trying to anodize. Bars and fasteners are easy to DIY... But large pannels of aluminum require amperages in the 50a range, hunks of lead, and a lot of electrolyte.
