For the last couple of months I've been trying to get my dad to upgrade to a new computer (mostly so I could play unreal with my younger brother who can't afford his own). He finally agreed to look into it but he doesn't want to spend more then 700$ Canadian on it. Any suggestions?
 
you're not going to find much for the $75 US you are looking to spend. :D

Are you going to be keeping the same monitor, keyboard and mouse?
Or do those need to be in the $700 CDN too?
 
as long as you're keeping your old monitor and maybe hd, you should be able to get quite good computer for that price :)

i'd get a barton mobile 2400+, 2 x 256 mb of some PC3200 ram, either an abit nf7-s or a dfi infinity ultra, and then a nvidia 5900xt/se video card. or a ati 9600xt.
 
Go to www.ncix.com then go to PC Builder, make a system and watch the price on the side. Then subtract about 100 bucks, that usualy gives me a good esimate.

i got my 9800pro from the states used for 180, here it is 485 cdn, i saved about 250bucks canadian from the states.
 
Monitor, mouse and keyboard are being kept so its just the pc for 700. Thanks for the help ill see what i can find on ncix.

You'd have to buy a Floppy disk, unless you want to pull it out of your old system.
A floppy disk would be about 10-15 bucks. USD
You'd also have to puy a Power Supply, unless you wanna take it out your old one.

For your price range, i'd have to say Athlon, with NForce2 Chipset and dual channel. For vid card, go Radeon 9600, or 9800 if you can afford it. Mobo should have onboard everything (sound, network, USB 2.0 :rolleyes: ) except, of course, video. I cannot reccommend ASUS motherboards enough, they are awesome mobos with great options and gear. Are you going to OC it? If you are, you could afford to get a slightly slower proccessor, thereby saving money. Also, try and get good cooling. Good luck with this project of yours, a system like that should kick ass.
 
Keep in mind the 2500+ is less than $80 in the states. Thats a lot of bang for your buck.

Something slower will do fine for most applications. A 1700 or 1800 would work well too. Id stay away from intel, they dont really have any budget solutions worth a flip.
 
I used NCIX pc builder and then I looked around for better prices, here is what I came up with:

I don't need drives of any sort as I will be taking them from the existing computer (120 GB Maxtor and a decent LG burner).

I do have some questions though.
1) should I get the 9600 pro or should I spend a little extra and get the XT, also, why is sapphire so much cheaper then just regular ATI.

2)Should I get a cheaper tower w/o a power supply and then go buy a 350 Enermax or Antec? I don't want something thats going to fry the computer a few months down the road. (Where can I get a cheaper case?)

3)Is it worth getting the Athalon XP 2600+ for the slightly large cash size (the price is only $4 more then the 2500+)

Just a few words of wisdom: If this system is for UT2004, you should endeavour to have around 768 megs of memory. 512 megs of memory, while perfectly fine in game, gives pretty long load times (35 seconds for me) between maps.

I upgraded to a gig, but figure 768 is probably enough since you're on a budget :).

So... 256 x 3.

Also, if you're on a budget I would not worry about 'super' memory. NForce 2 mobo's are quite tweakable and at worst you can run your memory slower than your FSB speed, and still end up with a faster system. If saving money this way would mean 768 megs of ram instead of 512, I would say it's smarter given UT2004 is a memory hog.

1. Well is its only a little extra I say get the 9600XT.
2. Yes get a case without a PSU, and buy a quality one if you budget allows.
3. I think getting the 2600+ will be a better option if you don't plan on overclocking. (but I really do not know if the 2600+ can overclock or not.) Also all of the newer 2500+ have thier multiplier locked but you can still overclock using the FSB if you have some good PC3200 ram. So someone with experience using a 2600+ might be able to help with this answer.
 
I'm not planning on overclocking. Does anyone know where I can get decently priced RAM?

anyway yea if your are going to be paying a 120 on freakin pc2700 get corsair xms pc3200 ddr400 or actualy pay for pc2700. 120 is a terrible price. and as for that 200 dollar 9600, WRONG. saphire 9800 pro for 200 at newegg

i recently bought the ram, processor, mobo, and graphics card in my sig for something like $750 CDN. go with what i got, just maybe get a 9600 pro or something.

I was looking at the 9800 pro and the cheapest I could find it was $314 CAD (not sapphire)... which isn't a bad price when you think about it. It's a shame that newegg doesn't ship anywhere but the states. I'm sure they loose a ton of buisness.
