Actually this pc will be for my wife.
She is a light gamer (Sims 3 & Dragon Age) are the game of choice now. Other than that she just surfs the internet and e-mails.
Her current pc is a Pentium D 2.4 gig single core, with only agp graphics. Yea, it`s 10 years old and slower than molassis.
I`ve been looking at parts for hours now and its getting more and more confusing when you consider what mobo/cpu/ram works together.
She only wants to spend $550 to $600 on a pc and only needs the tower.
I know its getting by cheap but she`s a penny pincher, unlike me.
I`d consider complete towers or a parts list that can get me in the price range.

Honestly the best advice I can give is its almost unnecessary to build a sub $600 desktop these days, unless you have a specific goal in mind. If general computing is all she is looking to do a basic dell tower or even a mac mini is all she needs, and it will be infinitely easier than building something.

In this particular case, the OP's wife is planning on gaming. That pretty much means building a gaming PC. A prebuilt gaming PC is just not a good choice in that price range.

I agree that a pre-built gaming machine is not a good value: The base configuration is attractively priced, but the upgrades cost significantly more money than what one can buy online individually. In that price range a pre-built "gaming" system would have been much too expensive for the performance, with weak-performing GPUs and/or a weak CPU.
