Build my dad a new computer

kumquat still has a point: Your father would still be fine with the GT 640 since he's not gaming.

Actually, the reason for the nearly equal price of the GT 640 and the GTX 650 is simply the amount of VRAM: 2GB of slow DDR3 VRAM for the GT 640 and 1GB of faster GDDR5 VRAM for the GTX 650. (Although there are a few GT 640s with 1GB of VRAM on the market, most GT 640s come with 2GB.) A GTX 650 with 2GB of VRAM would cost you quite a bit more than its 1GB sibling. Thus, you gain some but lose some with the GTX 650 as it uses the exact same GPU as the GT 640 (but with higher clocks and greater memory throughput).

well, i just went with the 650gtx with 2gb, he most likely wont need that much power but oh well.

i put together the comp today and realized something annoying about intel heatsink fan. the fan doesnt spin becuase the wire got in the fan path that went around. I had to loosen the wire and figure out where to hide it.

now need to install windows and stuff on it.
