Greetings,

New member here seeking some advice.
I'm looking to upgrade my network. So I think I need to figure out what type of disk sub system I need to build.

My purpose is to transfer movie, music, TV shows, ect. over infiniband and Gigabit. Now I would like to run a couple of vm's also. Now I am not a very PC savvy guy, just a basic windows user and if something could be improved I'm willing to try.

Hardware I'm using is my old gaming pc's as a server and other PC as a workstation both x58 motherboard. Server parts is Gigabyte ud3r motherboard, 920 chip (will upgrade) , 24gb memory, 5770 graphics card, Seagate 13* 3tb hard drive (6 full) IBM 1015, Mellonox qdr nic, Samsung 64gb ssd, Fractal R2 case, Corsair 650 watts power supply. Windows 2012 standard with maybe 2 VM running.

I would like to add another IBM m1015 then I could add some ssd's to the card. Now I was thinking of adding a few Intel DC 3700 or DC 3500 drives to be used as VM and transferring media. The reason I am looking at these drives is for it's abilities to handle alot of writes and maintain it's speed.

Workstation is an Asus P6T7 ws motherboard, L5639 chip, 12gb ecc memory, 4* Ocz vertex 30gb, 5770 graphics card, Mellonex qdr nic, 2650 TV tuner.

So add a IBM m1015 with a couple Intel drives for recorded TV and editing movies as an upgrade? Maybe add 1 VM on windows 8.

OK so I removed the bottleneck I had between each PC as writing to the server at Gigabit speed was not cutting it for me. Now I feel like buying a few ssd to be able to transfer 200gb to 500gb of edited movies faster than 160mb's that I'm currently limited to by the Seagate drives. I don't plan on getting Max speed but would like to get close to 2000 reads on the workstation through out a 200 to 500gb file transfer.

Maybe somebody can tell me what I could do with current drives before I go out and buy new drives. I have a basic media server sharing to 5 PC Gigabit and an workstation connected directly by infiniband qdr link. I have used a 20gb of ram disk and while it was fun it is just not enough space.
I looked into a couple pci e raid card but feel about 3 to 4 ssd in each PC in some raid would be better. I guess this is a question for people that have or used 10gbe or iboip, what kind of hard drive system did you guys run? Budget would be about 1400$ for both PC to start. That would be 2 hba's and four ssd.

I'm looking for advice that can speed up my transfer over infiniband.

You have a disk setup capable of sustaining writes faster than 125 MB/s? :eek:

Are you running highly parallel workloads, or is it just point-to-point transfer speeds you're after?
 
I'm just talking point to point transfer. After ripping like 6 BD movies and 10 TV shows adds up fast.
 
If you want to use windows as your main OS for your fileserver, then a real RAID card is your best and only option. You will be able to easily pull like 400-500MB/s writes with your current setup over 10gE with your current setup.

I'm not sure what you mean, but I can transfer media at those speeds. I'm looking for more than what the ich 10 can do. I used a 20gb ram disk on server and 4 vertex 30gb ssd in raid 0. I have running this set up since 07-08, my current ssd raid is my bottleneck.

I was thinking about Fusion IO or Revo drive could work. I'm looking for a little umph the next level of speed. I hope it's not a confusing question.
 
If you've got money to burn on FIO then you'll be pretty pleased with the performance. They new ioScale cards are "cheaper" than the ioDrives were and much faster, just make sure you're mirroring them or whatever.
 
In your setup right now does the server connect directly to the workstation via the Mellonox qdr nics? Sorry for my noobness but I have 0 experience with Enterprise networking. If so this negates the need for a 10GB/Infiniband switch correct?
