For my vote on the top buggiest games, I would have to vote for.....
Enter the Matrix (Its like they didnt even finish the game)
Vampire the Masquarades Bloodlines (This game had a bug that required a patch in order to progress past the point of the bug)
Gothic 1 (I remember too many bugs in that game than I can count, but I still love it!)
Black and White (I loved this game, but damn it was broken)
Superman 64 (One of the worst games ever made, period)

Black and White was buggy? Hm, I never had any problems with it.

Black and White was way buggy. That was actually going to be my vote. I could never get the sound to work past the second mission, and I could rarely get past the second mission to begin with because it crashes so much.

Black and White was never broken, maybe your PC was.

Anywhoo, that vote goes to any EA game the past 2 years.

Yeah, my pc was "broken." All three I've installed it on. So was Mr. Satan's, apparently, as well as the 7 other people I knew who tried to play the game. You sir, are a hardware expert.

More likely, the game had issues with numerous pieces of hardware and drivers, and the people who had no trouble with it (the minority) just happened to have a good combination of the above.

*lol* Enter the Matrix, definitely!

I still remember the driving sequences... You're a gunner on the passenger of the car, and the AI drives. Of course, you can't hit anything because the car careens madly around the level, clips though walls, and has an annoying tendency to drive into pillars and get stuck.

BF1942 before the first patch

Man I remember the demo being great and then the game came out which was fun, but certain maps would crash servers regardless of method until that patch came out.

Remember the chat lag? OMFG that was so annoying. 30 second delay from typing to seeing it on screen. Took EA months to fix that damn thing

Thanks for editing your post to remove the flaming.

I would like to know where you came up with the idea that "thousands" of people ran it with no problems, and also why you are so offended by the notion that lots of people have had problems with it. Have you seen it run "beautiful[ly]" on other machines? Because I have seen it crash/be buggy on numerous PC's, and don't bring PC experience or whatever into it because I would rather not get into an e-penis-size battle.

The Matrix Online..

Everytime there was a patch I would have to reformat and still couldn't play it was horrible I had fun playing when i could but I couldn't that much..

I would have to vote for the last installment of the High Heat Baseball series by 3DO for the PC. Possibly the best baseball simulation series ever done but it got buggier with every release. Announcers would stutter when a player came to bat and it would keep repeating for innings. The game would crash like 30% of the time forcing you to replay a game.

Battlefield 1942 was sooooo buggy. I remember it having issues with my friends video card when we were at a local lan party. He could see things and tell kinda what was going on but his character was running around under the ground and all the textures were black and green. Heheh

The original Outpost had some big issues as well, if I remember correctly you couldn't get past a certain point without the patch (which you had to request from tech support - they would mail it to you on a pair of 3.5" diskettes).

Well so far I am not happy with the online steam version of HL2. I was in Iraq for a year and before that I didnt have a computer that could handle it. I just recently got the game and have been trying to play it. I have gotten to the spot where you just get back from under the big bridge. It crashes ALOT and is it so hard for Valve to program a game that the mouse pointer doesnt do goofey things on the front menu, heh. I have also noticed wierd things within the game. I guess I should have just gone to the store and bought the game, the online buy version feels like I am actually playing on a online server. I have noticed 2 areas that feel like I have a high ping and everytime I touch a shelf it like teleports me back like 5 feet. I dont have any problems with any other games, so I know its not the comptuer. But HL2 does perfer the ATI cards so maybe its an nvidia problem.

Daggerfall
Asheron's Call 2 (took them like, 2 years to fix chat issues)
World of Warcraft when it was first launched

and last but not least *drum roll*

BATTLEFIELD 2

Relax guys, don't turn this into a pissing match please.

Remember, everyone is entitled to their opinions.

Metroid Prime for Gamecube, locked up on me quite a few times, which is unacceptable for a console game, I remember having to do one section a good 20+ times because the game would consitantly lock up on the same elevator. Was still a great game though.

Yeah considering how consoles are supposed to be only for gaming, they should run games perfectly in my opinion. Its just not acceptable for a console game to be locking up and having lots of problems. I mean come on, hire some better testers.

I just remembered another horribly buggy game. True Crime 2 for PS2 is horribly buggy. Its almost up there with Enter the Matrix. Sometimes the game will just crash, I remember losing my save with that game and man it pisses me off.

The online and retail versions of HL2 are exactly the same tho, so how you got it doesn't really matter. You still have to install Steam, activate online, all that. Unless your download got corrupted, i guess. Sounds like an aggravating problem.

I haven't played any MASSIVELY buggy games that i can remember. Although, i just bought Morrowind and sometimes it will crash to the desktop when i try to load a quicksave, and for some reason if my computer has been on for a while and i try to load it, the whole computer locks up and i have to hit the restart button. But it runs fine right after the computer boots. Kind of annoying.

Gotta go with that Troika classic, Temple of Elemental Evil.

Such a bummer about that game; it had so much potential. I still play it occasionally (Co8 + unofficial dev work fixed quite a few problems including looting with DX9.0c)

In honor of this thread I'm going to install Ultima IX on my gaming rig and not back *anything* up.

One time Deus Ex crashed and took a HDD along for the ride. Dunno *what* to blame for that (certainly not the game).

Even though it was one of my favorite games of all time, my vote goes for -

The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall

Heh, this reminds of me an N64 controller my friends had. I know this sounds weird but it's true: it was a Mad Catz controller, and it worked really poorly (whoever was the best at a given game was forced to use it). But we found out that if you shook the controller really hard, it would freeze up whatever game you were playing. Complete lock-up. I've never seen another controller that could do that, but we used to have a lot of fun with it: "I hate this game! *shakes controller* ahh, much better." :)

This is based on their initial state upon launch, patches have fixed most of the following games.

- Vampire: Bloodlines
I'm still waiting for the ability to use more than two speakers for sound. Maybe it's a Malchavian skill you eventually aquire.

- Battlefield 2
Black textures, missing sounds, exploits, and horrible lag and framerates. Even with all of that still happening, EA had the nerve to release an expansion pack instead of fixing all of the problems.

- Half Life 2
As much as I love Half Life 2 and will defend it to death, it was a trainwreck upon launch. Just mention the word stutter to someone and if they cringe in pain, you know they played Half Life 2 upon launch.

- Anarchy Online
Touted as the worst MMO launch of all time. It's now one of the best MMORPG's out there, but the first 3 months or so of it's life were aweful. It's surprising that they still have a playerbase after that fiasco.

Even though it's my favorite game right now I'd have to say BF2. Holee crap does it have buggies. lol But the first patch fixed those. Then the 2nd patch fixed 'em, too. The 3rd patch fixed all the bugs, too. The 4th patch also fixed all the bugs. The 5th patch fixed all the bugs and hopefully the 6th patch will also fix all the bugs. :D

My favorite games of all time have been the Ultima series, but I couldn't even get through half of Ultima IX. EA used to send cd's with patches for registered users, but they never fixed it to the point where I could finish it.

Hehe yeah battlefield 2 was bad. I remember when the first patch came out and it actually added more bugs, so they EA actually took the patch off and made a new one because the first patch was horrible. A patch that makes the game worse is just a joke.

I had a funny bug happen to me in the beginning of HL2. Its during the training areas of the game where they have the user interact with certain things so you can get a feel for the game. one of the guards threw a soda can on the ground (only for some strange reason it landed behind him when he threw it) then he told me to pick it up and throw the can into the trashcan... so i tried but then he beat me everytime i got near him. i restarted the mission and it didnt happen again.

i think my vote would have to go to the tony hawk series. past part 1 it just got too crazy with bugs.

Someone already mentioned Outpost, but I didn't see anyone mention the Holy Grail of buggy games, Battlecruiser 3000.

Wow! My memory sucks pretty bad. I seriously don't remember having to do that in HL2....

you'd remember if it happened to you!

Honorable metnions: Myth 2 and Tribes 2

Myth 2 had a bug not in the game but the uninstaller, where it would attempt to uninstall everything on the partition.

Tribes 2 had a bug in one of the patches released that effectively broke the windows installations(I dont know what had caused this)
