So shacknews announced last night that they were broadcasting from E3 in HD, i was naturally excited as a mercury member, untill i found out my 6800gt agp card isn't even able to play these wmv-hd encoded files.

http://shacknews.vo.llnwd.net/o2/e3_teaser.wmv

I know from browsing the web a little this is a hardware issue and as such not resolvable with a new nvidia driver, but is there anyway to make my cpu decoding more efficient ? (athlon 64 3500+)

Something must be VERY wrong with you card?
Or a codec/driver issue?
I have a P4A 2.4Ghz, ASUS P4T-E, 512 MB RD-RAM and a AGP Sparkle 6800GT(71.89) and I play that file just fine?
(CPU load was 60-70%)

Terra - Boring fountain..but the file looked fine..

I have no clue, but I think you can stop blaming you 6800GT(I know yours is a Sparkle too;) ) as it works fine for me...crisp, clear and no stuttering here...
Must be something else..perhaps a chipset conflict/bug?
Or otherwise I am just plain lucky? :S *L*

Terra - BTW Velkommen ombord her..jeg er også dansk ;) *GG*

The GPU isn't broken, but the VPU is borked.
But that dosn't mean that you can't play the files, only that you don't get any hardware decoding done in the VPU when viewing wmv-files, only the CPU decodes.
Although I belive the hardware MPEG-2 hardware decoding works in the AGP 6800's

Terra - Is there another common factor besides people having the 6800AGP?

Found this from NVIDA regarding the abilities of the VPU:

PureVideo features:

The AGP 6800GT:

MPEG-2:
SD/HD hardware accelerated decode and display processing

WMV9:
SD/HD display processing including Gamma Correction and Color Space Conversion

Post Processing:
Spatial-Temporal De-Interlacing
NTSC 3:2 Pull Down
NTSC 3:2 Bad Edit Correction

Terra...

I'll try some different drivers when i get home from work, otherwise i guess the obvious difference between yours and my machine is athlon vs pentium.

Are you sure you have the latest Windows Media Player and codecs installed?
I know the HD movies won't play well in the old Media Player, and perhaps not in alternative players either.

This teaser played fine on my 1800+ with a Radeon 8500 though (in WMP10), so your PC should have no problems, even if you wouldn't be using wmv acceleration (the 8500 doesn't have it either).

edit:
Just tested on my brothers P4 2.8 with an AGP 6800LE and it played fine there aswell, in WMP10. With the ForceWare 71.89 drivers (latest official drivers).

Which drivers are you using? When I first got my 6800GT when they first came out HD-WMV files would barely play. They'd skip frames and freeze up and use 100% of the CPU process. I believe that drivers past 67.XX resolve the issue, for the most part anyways. The VPU under performs but still does a bit of acceleration. Anyways HD-WMV files play fine now for me with a CPU usage of around 50%. .

This video looks amazing on my 2405FPW BTW. One of the sharpest I've seen so far.

Ya Steve's gotten some kickass gear ready for e3, lets hope it's a driver issue.
