OK I'm trying help my nephew out. He wants a computer for WOW. Hes currently using a 2.7ghz sempron with on board graphics. I've been out of the hardware game for too many years, and get a little overwhelmed with all the choices. I'm going to donate x2 6000+ processor and mobo (not great, but better than what hes got.)

I'm trying to find the best video card for $100 or less, i was thinking about trying to pick up a used gtx460 or something, but I'm not sure if the money could be spent on something better or not. Any input would be appreciated. Power supply will be addressed as well, so no need to worry about that.
 
7770 / 7750 prices are sinking fast. Performance is more or less in the gtx460 ballpark
 
a 7770 would be about 30% faster than a 7750 and a gtx460 would be about 40% than a 7750. with a 6000 X2 you will see little to no difference between those cards in most cases though. of course the resolution has not been mention though and that needs to be known.

If you look through Newegg's open box video cards from time to time you can find a GTX 460 for about $100.
 
Most likely 1360x768 maybe 1680x1050 depending on what he decides to use for a monitor.
 
I'd definately recommend going used. What kind of power supply does he have?
 
Definitely the best bang 4 buck is always buying used but....not everyone is comfortable with that.

I bought my 5770 for $60 shipped used. These days, id think you can easily find a 6850 or 6870 used for $80-$100. That would be the best in the AMD world.

And ya, PSU makes a difference. A little worried since he has such a shit rig previously, he probably has a shit PSU as well. Id upgrade that, you should be able to find a decent 400 watter at least for $15-$20.
 
that old cpu is going to keep cards like a 6850 or 6870 from even doing what they are capable of. if going new then I would get a 7750 as that is about as fast as the 5770/6770 and even that will be held back in many games especially at 1366x768. a 7750 is also really low power so unless that psu is complete junk it should run a system with 6000 X2 and 7750.
