Budget video card needed.

Im trying to build a light gaming system for a friend whos on a tight budget. Im looking in gettin the best video card below $100. Any suggestions?

So far ive been lookin at the ati 9600 w/ 256 ddr ram, or a geforce 6200 with the same ram. Are these just about the best for this price, I would ideally like to get it new, not a refurb.

Whoa dude, totally looking the wrong way. 256Mb of ram on those is a total waste, they can never use that much, not even probably 128Mb on those even.

Get yourself a nice 9800 Pro refurb, or spend a few extra dollars and get a new one, you'll enjoy it and its around 80% faster than the two you listed.
 
yes.. I agree...a 9800pro 128bit 128mb ram can be had for 120-130 new...and will whip the floor on both those "256 mb" cards you listed COMBINED.. meaning.... 6200 fps + 9600 pro fps is less than a 9800pro would get :)

No, not a freaking 128bit. Guess you havent looked at Newegg lately, pretty much alllll of the 9800 Pros are 256bit again. Dont ever suggest a 128bit 9800Pro, jesus those thing suck. Plus the 256bit ones are around $120 new, or $92 used.
 
The 9800 pro refurb is your best bet right now. Or you could pick up a 6800 vanilla / 6600 GT on ebay really cheap if you wanted to try that route.

typo typo!!!! yes offcourse 256bit :p ... WTH was I thinking.... well I think I know what I was thinking... I was talking to some guy at another forum about his 5200 and 64 bit or 128 bit and Ofoucrse I told him 128bit would kill the 64bit...and yah..sorry my mistake :)
 
i got a 5800 ultra and a 5900 non ultra i'm selling on ebay....both should prolly close around 100 bucks. Both work perfectly and are less than 2 weeks old. PM me if intrested.
 
I used to think there was no middle ground between the Ti4200 and 6600 GT until someone recommended an ATI video card. I looked at some benchmarks then some prices. I suggest you look at 9550, 9600 Pro, 9800 Pro.

The 9800 Pro is said to be able to run UT2007 while the Geforce Ti4200 can't even run BF2. BF2 can be run on a 9550 (so I was told). The ATI listed above are in the order of how powerful they are.

If you're in Canada, look at the Sapphire models at canadacomputers.com

\EDIT: Or possibly X700 Pro or higher in a PCI-E.
