what do you think of this setup
Intel Pentium D 945 Presler 3.4GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80553945 - Retail

ASUS EAX1950PRO/HTDP/256M Radeon X1950PRO GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video

Card - Retail

ABIT IP-95 LGA 775 VIA P4M890 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

iam using DDR3200 2gigs kit fom my previous system which was 3ghz p4 precott 478
x800xl agp card iam using a 500wat NEoHE antec psu
320 gig seagate sata2 hd

Learn to spell "I'm", it's not "iam". Second that's a waste of money for what you can spend relatively on something better.

6300 or 6400
7600GT
1GB of Ram

That'd be much better than that. GHZ mean nothing.

to be honest.... it looks HORRIBLE!

Via motherboard = trash
its ok for stock, but they don't overclock very well.

Any Pentium D is outdated and even a 4300 or 6300 would be significantly faster than it.

Personally, I think you should sell your 2Gb of ddr and just go with a Core2, ddr2 and a 965 chipset motherboard.

You can probably get the same $ your paid for your ddr, or more even though its used.

are you guys serious ??
this all together cost me like 250 shiped over night
so 3.4ghz doesn't mean anything ???
i know the duos are multithread
i just wanted to cheap upgrade to pcie

a c2d beats the crap out of most p4's. I'd do what the poster above recomended - sell your old stuff, and get some 667mhz ddr2 ram, an e6300, and a 7900gs/gt/gtx video card. although the x1950pro isn't a bad card.

Why a E6300 when a E4300 is a bit cheaper, more down the road ??

I sold my DDR-400 RAM for more than I paid last summer so it's worthwhile.

Any conroe should be 50% faster (at minimum) than a similarly clocked Pentium anything...

That chip at 3.4 would be about equal to an E6300

ghz don't mean a thing anymore. That's a thing of the past.

Just look at the Fx62 and E6300.

FX62 @ stock
E6300 @ 2.6ghz (same as FX62 @ stock)

C2D is faster. Even at lower clocks.

MIGHT be close at stock speeds. C2D 1.86Ghz vs P-D 3.4Ghz

BUT the 945 would probably max around 4Ghz and be putting out A LOT OF HEAT, and require some really good cooling.

The 6300 will hit 2.8-3.0Ghz guaranteed. And most hit 3.2-3.4+Ghz fairly easily
At those speeds it would be faster than like a 5.0 - 7.0Ghz Pentium D!!

I had a Pentium D 920 at 4Ghz, and a Core2 at 3Ghz. So
the Pentium D had a 33% clock advantage but was still MUCH slower in
EVERYTHING!!

At 3Ghz the Core 2 is twice as fast for things that are pure CPU power, like Super Pi, etc... And over 50% faster in most gaming and other apps than the P-D at 4Ghz.

Here are some benchmarks of my system before & after.
You would see the same difference if you just swapped CPU's from Pentium D to Core 2.

ya i see your point
the c2d is better
iam in the process of getting DDR2
right now and i will probably get a C2D
i was just wonderign how much improvement there is between a 3.0ghz prescott 478
and pentium D 945 ????
i know the c2d is way better than i was just wondering what the numbers would be?

920 = 2.8GHz
930 = 3.0Ghz
940 = 3.2Ghz

So the 945 is 3.2Ghz right?

In some situations it would only be about 6.6% faster.
Pure clock speed. 3Ghz vs 3.2Ghz = 6.6% difference

Now in apps that can use the 2nd core like encoding apps it COULD be nearly 100% faster, if everything was optimized for dual core perfectly.

But in general, it would probably only be 6 - 20% (my guesstimate) and not really noticeable b/c you already had hyperthreading which helps with multitasking "smoothness"

If you go with the Core 2 and overclock it to 3Ghz (which is fairly easy), you would have an incredible difference.

I thought the 945 was 3.4ghz
but still the core2 duo beats it

i need to get DDR2 ram

Thats weird. It is 3.4Ghz

915 = 2.8Ghz

920 = 2.8Ghz
925 = 3.0Ghz

930 = 3.0Ghz
935 = 3.2Ghz

940 = 3.2Ghz
945 = 3.4Ghz

950 = 3.4Ghz

in the past its been like 530, 531, 53x, etc.. all have the same clock.

All i know is that P4 is just slow and expensive compared to C2D :eek:

Although I still do whip out my P4 3.4ghz everynow and then for some thrills :p
