I'm aiming at buying a new set of speakers... But, I'm really tight on a budget, and need something under 30$. I'd prefer 5.1, but I know it will be a labryinth to find a good set for that cheap... Any clue what to get? I'll be using it for UT2k4 and Far Cry, and then later for HL2.
 
Oh, and I'm currently using a soundblaster live, but will have it upgraded in a week to an audigy I believe.
 
spend a little money and get the logitech z640 its 5.1 and depending on the deal, you can find for as low as $50
 
SB live is fine for <$30 speakers. Upgrading your soudcard to make ~$30 speakers sound better is like polishing a turd. It's just not going to be much use.
 
Another vote for the Logitech Z640. Save up a bit more money and grab these ones. They are great budget speakers!
 
Even good/decent headphones would probably cost you more than $30 though. I'd budget at LEAST $50 for the actual output (headphones/speakers). The Audigy is not going to do you any good with crap speakers.
 
I say headphones for a number of reasons.

Any surround system you get around that price aint gonna be worth much, and I'm not a huge fan of the Logitechs anyway. You could get some ok stereo speakers but they won't position the sounds that well.

Decent headphones can actually do better than a surround system, the modern processing works so well that many hardcore gamers use headphones exclusively. Check out the Grado SR-60s, they're not too far from your price range and supposedly quite good.

That said, I like having speakers too because I don't always want something on my head... just that if you're concerned about gaming in that price range headphones might be better.

edit: oops i thought you said $50. Either way you'll need to save more money.
 
another vote for the 640s, good price/performance ratio
 
Ok... So what if I get the z640, but still keep a SB live? Or is the built in motherboard (HP a610 series) integrated 5.1 good enough? Cuz that's all the specs they gave me...
 
well i would say with the z640's it doesn't matter which one you use. you wont hear much of a difference
 
I wouldn't recommend the Grado 60's because you would simply not be able to wear them for any extended period of time. For headpones I recommned Sennheiser HD-497s.
 
Hmm, maybe a used set of cambridge soundworks "soundworks" speakers?

not sure how much they go for anymore, but I bet you can get a set form a kid leaving college on the cheap.
