I have 2 stock AMD hs sitting around and am wondering if I could just put a 92mm fan on one and be better than just stock cooling. This would be for HTPC where noise is big issue. I like the large fan to cool other parts also.

Surely some one has reported experience with this.

I believe this was one of the first computer mods ever done.

Someone stuck a fan on a passive heatsink

Yes... bigger and/or faster fans (ie. one that moves more air) will always cool better
 
Another mod is ducting your heatsink, not just to the side of your case, but to your window :)
